Every year 3 of us visit Amsterdam before heading off to a carnival in zwolle. We always book the same room at hotel Ben. Spacious room with bathroom. Popular with young travellers so lively atmosphere. Friendly helpful staff. You need to have good leg muscles for stairs.(but in the Netherlands that's usual) Clean rooms clean bathroom. Very close to red... More

It feels harsh giving this a 1 star, because the staff were ok and the location is fantastic, but it's just a dreadful hotel. The room was atrocious, it was so small and uncomfortable. We were on the top floor, meaning we had basically a 10 minute walk up narrow stairs before even reaching our room. We had to give... More

We booked 1 night at hotel Ben after me and my friend decided we didn't want to leave Amsterdam and we extended our trip for 1 extra night. Check in was quick and easy and we got a cheap deal on the room. We were right on the top floor and the stairs were a joke, especially after a joint... More

Stayed here for two March. On arrival The reception staff where very pleasant and helpful. We got our keys and opened the door to hike up and down 132 stairs to our room. The stair case absolutely stank of cats pee and had lots of cats hairs which I'm allergic to! Got into the room which was slanting to the... More

This hotel is a 5minute walk from the central train station in Amsterdam, "Centraal". Cheapest hotel I could find with a central location. I knew it was rough and it lived up to it's review ! Lots of stairs to climb, no lift, very small room with no window view but if all you want is a place to sleep... More

This s****hole wasn't cheap and had bonus fees that were brought to our attention when we checked in. Not only the fees, but WiFi is not free and is slower than a snail. The bald scumbag who works the counter in the morning tries to charge you 2 euros for 1 hour of WiFi per person! Not only that but... More

Be ready to climb four floors to reach your not so clean room then be ready to pay in advance and only cash ( credit cards were unavailable) otherwise they will refuse you the entrance to your room even if you had already paid for it. Discussing with a unpolite night shift was pretty unpleasant. By far the ugliest hotel... More

Okay so it's not the most perfect hotel in the world, the stairs are steep, the shower is terrible and the music from the club next door is a killer for trying to nod off, but for a one star hotel, I was impressed In a great location with everything you need only round the corner, and most of the... My friends had already stayed here and had warned me that it was cheap for a reason. This place is not for you If you appreciate a good hotel room! We had a small room with 5 beds, we had enough room to walk to our bed to the toilet. The shower is temperamental so don't expect a refreshing wash.... More

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
