I have been here 3 years ago with a friend for a weekend in Amsterdam. The hotel is really essential placed nearby Dam Square and the Central Station (5 minutes walking). It has got clean and quite large rooms with bathroom. The only problem is the noisy of people walking on the stairs closed to the large amount of the... More

Have stayed at the van gelder on numerous occasions and every time have been happy with the hotel. The rooms are cleaned every day. The hotel is on damrak so your right in the middle of the hustle and bustle!! Will stay at the van gelder on every trip to Amsterdam. Not suitable for wheelchair users due to the stairs... More

Usually I don't mind the budget places... But... This place sucks! Don't waste your time, money or energy even thinking about staying here. They lied about the wifi (not available in the rooms, only by the front desk.) the bed was so bad, floor would have been better. Had to check out & move hotels due to no wifi in... More

Me and my wife booked this hotel for friends, But they could not go so we cancelled our original hotel and had this room instead because it was half the price, when we first arrived they showed us to our room which was good for about an hour when a stag party moved next door, me and the wife could... Some staff are cool but others are moody. The rooms are really small and kinda dirty. It's fairly noisy due to it's location. However, it's cheap and smoke friendly! Showers are nice too. Great location.

We arrived by train at 7AM with nothing booked. Dropped our packs in an open restaurant, drank coffee and took turns cruising for rooms. I found the Van Gelder right next store and they had a room for the next two nights. Perfect. I looked at it, okayed it and left our packs (no charge) until later. When we returned... More

I have stayed at this hotel over some 30 years. The central location is incredibly convenient: a few minutes walk to most major attractions; very convenient for Central Station and all public transport. Family run for all these years, the place is spotlessly clean. All rooms have private facilities and the costs are extremely reasonable for a city centre hotel.... More

Staff are friendly and the rooms have TV, shower. No tea or coffee though. Right in the middle of the town but not in the red light area that's just round the corner. Would say that if you had problems with stairs this hotel is not ideal for you! Would stay again.

I have stayed at this hotel a few times now, it's basic but very clean and MUCH better than any similar priced hotels in the area, staff are clean and friendly, location is a 3 minute walk from Centraal Station and close to all the attractions

Great place to stay if you not to be walking distance to most the attractions Amsterdam is known for. It's right on the Main Street meaning you can walk the canals, check out the red light district, spend the day shopping of crawl you way around the seemingly endless supply of bars and "coffee" shops. Nice clean rooms, pretty spacious... More

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
