We stayed here last month for 5 nights. Brilliant location, close to everything inc the station. Staff very helpful, in fact there was nothing they couldn't do! rooms and common areas very clean indeed. Basic breakfast, but this is all you need to start your day! stairs were a little steep, but after a couple of days you soon got... More

Love this place have stayed at least 6 times and would stay over and over again. Great family run place, very basic breakfast, boiled eggs, toast and tea. Clean and smoker friendly, what more could you want in Amsterdam! And it's located less than a 5 minute walk from the station.

This hotel was basic and had a lot of stairs but was beautifully clean and tidy with comfortable beds. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. Room was cleaned every day and fresh toiletries placed in the bathroom. The only downside was no tea/coffe making facilities but apparently this is normal for this type of hotel. The staff would supply... More

Stayed here 3 times now, extremely convenient for the sorded sights of Amsterdams red light, across the road from the grasshopper, short walk from central station. Clean, presentable, stairs a bit steep after a session. I keep staying here because its in just the right location.

I went on a lads holiday to Amsterdam, and chose to stay at the Van Gelder after previously stopping here the year before. The location is amazing as everyone states but if you want this location you will get a bit of noise also naturally. If you want peace and serenity go stop in the country side obviously. Very cheap... More

I have been here 3 years ago with a friend for a weekend in Amsterdam. The hotel is really essential placed nearby Dam Square and the Central Station (5 minutes walking). It has got clean and quite large rooms with bathroom. The only problem is the noisy of people walking on the stairs closed to the large amount of the... More

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
