As my first Hostel experience. I was a little hesitant to say the least. Once I arived I was greeted with very friendly staff and taken to a very clean and well kept room (8 bed dorm). I felt very comfortable throughout my stay here and would reccomend / stay here again!

I stayed at this special place twice in six weeks, I liked it so much that I extended my stay of one night to five. The hostel it self is a very large ex convent (I was told), its size helps so much with the overall feeling of spaciousness, which is important if you think how many people it can... More

This Hostel is on the middle off the red light very good location to whom is looking for parties. You can go walking to almost all the attractions, like Heineken , Anne Frank's house and the staff team services are really good. Wow I'm not gonna tell you about the breakfast ou have to try it, was the best that... More

Everything is calm, the staff is simple amazing and cute. They really want to take care of you. Clean bedroom, toilet and everything else. Because of the rules it is easy to sleep no matter the time.Definitely recommended and when I come to AMS again Shelter will be my opinion

First of all, the location of the hostel is great, and the staff were mostly friendly. However, I had a terrible experience the first day and it really hampered my entire stay here in Amsterdam. I was taking a shower in the girl's washroom at around 6:30 AM and all of the sudden this guy walked in. I had the... More

I stayed in Shelter City for two nights in early December. It's totally well located, right in the Red Light District, near the Centraal Station, and the majority of the staff was friendly and helpful. The mattress was very comfortable and, even thought I was at the 16 bed room, I had two pretty restful nights and you can't hear... More

The hostal was in an incredible location. Just a few minutes from Amsterdam Central Station, which is very convenient to explore the city. A clean hostal, The rooms are a bit small for all the beds so that might be a bit unconfortable. There's only one bathroom each floor and that might get crowed sometimes (the girl's one of course).... More

On the website, the hôstel looks good and nice, what a deception. We booked a 2 people room. The room is quite big, but not clean at all, really old with scary paints on the wall. But the worst is the atmosphere: I like hostel because is an occasion to meet people. Here, nobody say hello, excepted (some) of the... More

Was recommended to stay here from a friend. Stayed in a 4 bed semi private room that had a bathroom and shower in it. Rooms were clean and quiet although overall hostel was a little old and not recently renovated. Staff were very friendly and helpful (we recommend buying canal tour tickets from them). Very safe and secure (had to... More

Booked this hostel not knowing it was a christian hostel. Great location in the middle of the red light district. I didn't like that all the dorms don't have locks so you can potentially walk in to any room if you wish; so that didn't make me feel very safe but there are 24hr security on the front door who... Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
