Ideally suited for viewing the city, short walk from Central Station. Our bedroom was a little tired and could do with a refurbishment. The bed and mattress protector not that clean although sheets were fine. The carpet is probably due a replacement. The bathroom was really nice. We had room 136 which unfortunately overlooks the road and there is a... More

Having stayed at this hotel on a number of occasions, this recent visit has to be commented on. The receptionist was very unhelpful on check in as we had booked a double room and she was adamant we had to have a twin in the room on the top floor whilst i stood by my booking she said she could... The plush reception and online pictures do little to prepare you for the horrors of this place. The room was far too small for a twin and a ridiculously impractical shape (barely wider the single beds, which were end-to-end). But even if, given the apparently modest price, you are willing to sacrifice space, the accommodation was shabby and dirty. There... More

I should have known that by backing onto the Red Light District, this hotel was going to cause me grief. My room was on the third floor but it wasn't high enough to drown out the noise from the street below. I didn't get a full nights sleep the whole time I stayed there. To give you an idea of... More

Nice room bed was comfy and the bathroom had two steep stairs to enter. It was quiet and not far from the rail station and the red light district. The bus line was two short blocks away as well as the hop on hop off bus.we were very happy with the room. The front desk people were informative and happy... More

This hotel has a brilliant location between the red light area and Damrak. The room and bathroom were adequate, although some towels had holes in them and ,as it overlooked the Oude Kirk and rear of the hotel, it was very noisy. Bells from 8am to midnight and lots bar noise until at least 3am. The breakfast was good -fresh... More

Great location for Amsterdam,Dam Square to the left and coffee shops and red light to the right. The check in was very efficient by Louis. Front desk staff is always ready to help. Thank... More

1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2015

Our room was in the attic - lift to the third floor and then 2 flights steep stairs. The corridors hot and stuffy, carpet stained and old. It was more like a hostel than a hotel. The air con leaked, the room was shabby, small, not suitable for a couple. Not worth the money we paid to our travel agent... More

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
