My first visit to Amsterdam and although there is much to see and applaud, the center of the city around Dam Square is a mixture of history, style and a need for better street cleaners. It felt rather like London did in the 1970's - about to undergo massive civil change. However one exception was the Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky. We... More

My husband picked this hotel when we visited his parents last 2013 and I patted his back for a job well done. We got to see it once again when we showed Amsterdam to our friend we were traveling with this year The hotel I think is situated perfectly if you want to be in the center of everything. If... More

A great location right on Dam square. Close to cafes and tourist locations. Large hotel so delays at check in and out, but comfortable foyer to wait in. Definitely has a maze type feel due on construction and large size of hotel. Room was well appointed with good Wifi (free) and tea and coffee making facilities. Bathroom had a shower... More

Stayed here for a conference - it was underconstruction at the time but as I stayed in the new wing I was unaffected by the noise. The main entrance was unfortunately obscured so we have to use the side entrance but it couldn't be more centrally located in Dam Square. Nice, modern, spacious room I have no complaints.

The location of the hotel is very easier to go to anywhere. If this is your first time to Amsterdam, I recommend your guy to stay here, eg, Chinese food, Italian Food, convenience store, tram, Shoopping street is around you. You can also walk from Amsterdam Centraal Station to the hotel.

The location of this hotel is perfect for exploring the city as it is on Dam square and therefore really central; nearly everything I wanted to see in Amsterdam and popular tourist attractions were only a short walk from the hotel, such as Anne Frank House. The location is also very nice as the hotel is directly across from the... More

Visited for 3 nights at beginning of August with my partner. Hotel was very nice as was our room. However we waited about 20mins to get checked in and then in the morning we were woken with loud construction noise.

On arrival at 5.30 pm I was greeted by long queues at the reception desk ,20 minutes later I was told my room was not ready and would be at least another hour ( not what I expect from a 5 star hotel) . None of the staff seemed in the least pattered by this situation. And made no apologies.... More

We've stayed here several times over the years because the hotel sits right on Dam Square. It's a great place to people watch and the bars/restaurants are within close proximity. The hotel has 2 parts to it, one being a regular hotel and the other more like an apartment. The walk from Central Station is within a mile and that's... More

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
