I know Basel very well as I have visited a half a dozen times. I stayed in this hotel for a few days. While the hotel was clean and very well located, I felt the owners were stingy, Why do I say this? The room we stayed in had no extras, just the basics. The reception was only manned by... more

My husband, daughter and her husband and I stayed at this hotel and found it to be so interesting, comfortable, convenient to the town, and we loved taking the elevator to the street, which is in the downtown at Barfusserplatz. Otherwise, you can go out the door that goes to a church yard with trees and benches, which leads through... more

Switzerland is expensive and we wanted to find a centrally situated, reasonably priced, small hotel in Basel . As far as we were concerned this fitted the bill although it works out to be quite expensive when the local taxes are added in.The prices are in Swiss francs which are slightly less than half in English pounds.Ours worked out at... more

This wonderful hotel is actually a converted prison! We stayed here for 3 nights in June 2007 in a Kat A room with a great view of the town for $161/night. Breakfast was extra. The Kat A rooms are converted warden offices. The regular rooms seem to be two jail cells joined together. We never ate lunch or dinner at... more

We had a lovely room and great fun joking about being in jail for a couple of nights. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the front desk help is great. We'd stay here again. more

I stayed at this hotel in October 2006 and it was my favourite hotel in Switerland, it is not your typical characterless hotel. My room was very clean and the largest "single" I've every stayed in. It had a double bed and a sparkling new bathroom with modern fixtures. The hotel has an elevator down to the main town sqaure... more

My husband and I stayed at the Au Violon for two weeks in May. It was a wonderful experience. We do prefer smaller hotels that have “character”. I think the owners of the hotel have done a very good job of including modern conveniences while not spoiling the unique old-world charm of the building. We stayed in a Category A... more

Wonderful hotel. Extremely helpfull front desk staff. They helped me find a bank to purchase a gold bar, as well as provided helpfull info on day trips. Restaurant serves excellent meals. The glass enclosed elevator down to the old town provides evidence of the centuries old origins of this historic property. more

We stayed for 4 nights in December at the Au Violon and had a great time. We were in a Category A room on the top floor overlooking the square where the Christmas market was, but because the hotel is set back up from the square up a small hill, it was perfectly peaceful. We couldn't hear any traffic or... more

We had a twin room facing the courtyard so it was very quiet day and night. I suppose a good description for the room (one of the old cells) is functional. Comfortable bed, reasonable shower, adequate hanging space. Nothing in the way of 'extras' like nice toiletries or a tv. But I found the whole experience very charming. It has... more
