This hotel has definitely seen better times. Everything is a bit scuffed and dinghy. Hallways with scuff marks on the walls, loose cables, poorly fitted smoke detectors. The rooms are quite small, the shower and toilet (rust stains) seem to be left over from a previous era. The street outside is quite busy and noisy (trams are one, noisy customers... More

The hotel staff and services were were co-operating. The rooms were quite big and clean. The complimentary breakfast served was also very food. Its located near to the tram stations and free tram passes are also given to the customers

If I were not restricted by a minimum of 200 characters, I would simply say it all in one word "DON'T". Not too badly placed, quite central, the young man at the desk very helpful, but the room which provided an unwelcome steam bath, the decor, bed without sheets, the shower which had already seen better days years; more than... We had booked two rooms in Alexander Hotel for our four days visit in Basel city. It was a wonderful stay and everything went very smooth. A warm welcome by staff at the reception on arrival was amazing. Rooms are very clean and had excellent levels of decor and modern bathrooms. Bed was comfortable and had large pillows. Staff is... The rooms are basic and a touch of paint would be nice. However, everything is clean and in working order. Staff very friendly and helpful. Besides the free mobility ticket (all public transport free during your stay) I appreciated their offer on their website of submitting a reasonable offer for the room price you would be prepared to pay. Depending... More

I stayed at this hotel for two nights, the room was very small and basic. Because it was so small it heated up and became very stuffy, I had the choice of opening the window, though the trams are directly out the front so it was extremely loud, or have the window shut and boil... Therefore I got only a... More

To get to your hotel – 2 choices. Pay the taxi man 45 SWF for a 10-15 min journey to your hotel. OR pay nothing (if you have an official hotel reservation) and take FREE public transport. The bus you want will come in a few minutes, it’s the ’50 SBB Bannhoff’. Stay on it until you get to the... More

Alexander is the cheapest of the hotels near to Basler Messe (exhibition square), and a reasonable option for a short business visit. It's clean, everything works, free wifi, but the main reason for staying is the cost, about half that of nearby alternatives. Aim to get a single room for no more than CHF90. Buffet breakfast is included in the... More

We stayed 2 nights at the Alexander which has been awarded 3 stars. Usually in Switzerland 3-star hotels are very reasonable. This one is an old establishment which has been refurbished but with very little soul. The rooms are very austere and the renovation leaves you with pieces of furniture in which you will knock your head or other essential... More

Yes this hotel is run down, but it is clean and really cheap for Basel. We paid £60 a night through Octopus. The breakfast is an all you can eat continental (cereal, yougurt, meat, cheese, breads, oj and coffee) and was really nice. The hotel includes a free ''Basel Mobility'' pass so all your travel on the trams are free!... More
