It is highly suggested to have a car while visiting Frances Lodge. Franco mapped out our trips daily. We loved Pienza known for their Pecorino cheese. The shops are beautiful. We bought a piece and enjoyed back at Frances Lodge with a bottle of Altesino Brunello di Montalcino we had bought on the tour of the winery. The sun was... More

Our first traveling trip to Italy we looked for a central location that offered first class accommodations but local experience. My wife and I were so impressed I am writing my first travel post. Although we very rarely post an experience we would be be doing a great injustice for those traveling this region by not sharing our experience. To... More

We are remiss in not posting this sooner. We took our first trip to Italy at the end of September 2013 and the original plan did not include a stop in Sienna. We read about this place in Rick Steve's book and were very intrigued. After some wonderful email correspondence with Frances, we decided to change some plans and stay... More

Took Rick Steve's recommendation and had a wonderful stay in a beautiful farm house lodge overlooking Siena. The lodge is even more beautiful and appointed than even the web site shows. A great attention to detail and ambiance. You could not find better hosts than Frances and his wonderful/lovely wife Franca. Warm accommodating and very helpful on Siena, Chianti, Florence... More

We cannot say enough about our wonderful stay with Frances and Franco. They are without a doubt the most hospitable and gracious hosts you will ever have the pleasure of meeting. We recently had a beautiful experience staying at Frances' Lodge. We stayed in the Moroccan Suite and loved every minute of our two night stay. The Lodge is a short walk and bus ride away from Siena, but makes a perfect escape from this beautiful but busy tourist destination. Frances and Franco are lovely people. Their kindness and generosity was... More

An amazing place!!! Wonderful view and location. Frances and Franco are very welcoming and give great advice. Would recommend the evening picnic! The only negative I would say is that they seem to charge for everything. It was the only place in our 2 week vacation where we had to pay for air condition. It was unbearable the first night... I chose Frances' Lodge after a few months' searching books, the web, and talking to folks. The main reasons were Frances herself (her warm, detailed and prompt email responses to me) and the wonderful venue and location just outside the old city walls. Frances and Franco are wonderful, friendly and professional hosts both of whom have old ties to Tuscany... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Frances’ Lodge is a loverly restored country guest home set on a hill across from Siena. Its unbelievable view looks out over the old walled city from the top of a beautiful hilltop. It is here that, since the start of the 18th century, noble families of Siena kept their “villa”—the country house where they summered from May to November, to get away from the heat of the city and to watch over the harvests from their farm holdings; and here the Owners restored the 1853' largest "Limonaia" overlooking the Historical Garden, as part of a fascinating, rich of History, wonderful Estate, belonging to the same Family since quite 3 centuries. The commanding position of the house with its 360-degree panoramic views, the closeness to the city(only 1.8 km.—little more than a mile—as the crow flies), the silence and peace of being in the open countryside just outside the city walls... all of these features await you as soon as you pass through the gates, enter the lovely driveway, and behold the incredible view of Siena’s skyline amid vineyards, fruit orchards, and olive groves. You’ll be revived by sounds that busier parts of the world have forgotten: birds chirping, cicadas singing in summer, the wind blowing through the trees. ... more   less
