do not pay the high regular price - only if you get a bargain (<< below 60 Euros per night for a single incl breakfast). You pay for the location. Rooms very small, Italian breakfast not more than average

I stayed with a family group aged from 18 to 80. It's right in the centre with a nice piazza to have coffee while you meet with family going in and out. It's handy for everything from the city walls to the sights to the bus station. It has an air of faded elegance which we liked. The rooms varied.... More

Stayed at this hotel with some friends June 2014. This is a lovely unique hotel and yes the location is excellent but the hotel is a great place to stay. It is steeped in history, clean and the rooms we stayed in were spacious and perfect overlooking the square, fresh towels and linen everyday. To update and spruce up this... More

As others have said, the only thing going for this place is location--and given how tiny Lucca is, you'd be far better off staying at a nicer, less expensive place and simply walking a few extra steps. Shabby, overpriced, dim rooms; iffy plumbing; no amenities; semi-surly staff. The tiny breakfast room had those awful, stained, back-to-back, no-room-to-wiggle-out chairs. Eating there... More

Exept the exellent location, everything else is way from a 4 star experience. You can't Iron your own shirts and the hotel use a expernal company for ironing, it cost 7 € for each shirt and they will be back within 48 hours. Completely useless when you have a business meeting the next day and you arrives i the afternoon!... More

The Universo was once, clearly, a very grand establishment but is in need of a bit of a spruce up. The location is very central which was exactly what we were looking for. The rooms were spacious and very clean, I found the lack of a shower curtain a novelty rather than a problem, the staff were very friendly and... More

I stayed at this hotel for 2 days, left this morning. The hotel is very central, staff were helpful. The room was spacious and clean. Breakfast was good .my only complaint is the bathroom it really needs to be updated , no curtains on the bath so when you shower water goes everywhere , the toilet doesn't flush properly. I... More

Yes it's a bit faded and worn round the edges, but so am I. We came to be out and about, not sit in an hotel room. Many other hotels in the centre are tucked away but the view from our room was beautiful. This is a city centre hotel and therefore you should expect noise, but to be honest... More

Let me start by saying that I would go back to the Universo...but it is tired and old. Our room had very poor lighting...strange fixtures. The bathroom was nice, but there was no way to shower without getting everything wet. There was a tub with a hand held shower...impossible to master! Our room overlooked the plaza. The plaza was quite... More

Old classic Hotel. It certainly has seen grander days but we enjoyed the funky old world charm. Our room was very large with high ceilings & old style shutters opening onto the Piazza. It was a little noisy early evening, but quieted down overnight. Thought the breakfast was fine, typical European fare. The first desk clerk we dealt with was... More
