Great location, efficient air conditioning, free wifi and daily change of bed linen and towels are the positives. We slept very well as the rooms are dark and outside it is very quiet in the early morning. But on the downside: The hotel is VERY old and tired and as most other reviewers have said, is in dire need of... More

Great location for the hotel in the Piazza del Giglio, near to good restaurants and a short walk to the Puccini e la sua Lucca in the church of San Giovanni. Helpful staff. Rooms a little tired and breakfast passable. Could do with better coffee.

Great location, lovely rooms and great breakfast. However did not have any internet access on third floor. Windows facing Piazza Napoleone. Staff friendly and helpful. Room was very clean. Would stay here again if I ever come back to Lucca.

Eight opera fans booked four rooms at the Universo. Our room had two comfortable single beds, a large bathroom with the highest ceiling I have ever seen. The room had a fridge but no safe although there was a deposit box in reception. Linen was changed every day and was of high quality. We turned off the air conditioning as... More

The hotel is very conveniently situated for getting anywhere in Lucca. I shared a room with a friend. The room had a balcony and a pleasant view. The decor was tired, the bathroom small and overcrowded, with no shower screen or curtain so the water went everywhere. My bedside light didn't work, and the air con dripped. There was no... More

We had a flying visit to Lucca and stayed here for 4 nights, a perfect location situated inside the old city walls so unless you want to visit Pisa or Florence (which are only a short train journey away) there is no need for taxis or car hire. The hotel is ideal for anyone who likes to walk out in... More

do not pay the high regular price - only if you get a bargain (<< below 60 Euros per night for a single incl breakfast). You pay for the location. Rooms very small, Italian breakfast not more than average

I stayed with a family group aged from 18 to 80. It's right in the centre with a nice piazza to have coffee while you meet with family going in and out. It's handy for everything from the city walls to the sights to the bus station. It has an air of faded elegance which we liked. The rooms varied.... More

Stayed at this hotel with some friends June 2014. This is a lovely unique hotel and yes the location is excellent but the hotel is a great place to stay. It is steeped in history, clean and the rooms we stayed in were spacious and perfect overlooking the square, fresh towels and linen everyday. To update and spruce up this... More

As others have said, the only thing going for this place is location--and given how tiny Lucca is, you'd be far better off staying at a nicer, less expensive place and simply walking a few extra steps. Shabby, overpriced, dim rooms; iffy plumbing; no amenities; semi-surly staff. The tiny breakfast room had those awful, stained, back-to-back, no-room-to-wiggle-out chairs. Eating there... More
