We stay only one night in Lucca, going from Bologna to Cinque Terre. The location is great inside the walled city and close to everything that matters in Lucca. That central location allowed us to enjoy that amazing city of Lucca during the short time we had available. The rooms were very clean and comfortable and the breakfast excellent. The... More

Traveling by train from Florence Italy to Cinque Terre we spent one night at the Hotel Universo. What a gem! It is located near the train station but inside the walled city. You can walk where ever you would like to go. Enjoy! When we return to Italy we will enjoy Lucca and this hotel again.

This Hotel was close enough to the action in the town of Lucca, yet far enough from the shopping district to avoid congestion. It had a small breakfast room with limited choices in the morning, no restaurant on the premises. The weekend nightlife happened right under our front Room 56 window so it was a little noisy, but tolerable. Perfect... More

We stayed here hor 2 nights B&B in May this year. It is ideally situated within the walls of Lucca. Its location is such that it gives access to the train and bus area- Piazza Verdi. Close to the duomo and shopping area of Via Fillungo, you are within easy reach of good restaurants, too, along wth the main sites.... More

Room 60 - September 2014 - one night - $129 USD (made reservation ahead of time) Stepping into the three-star, 56 room Hotel Universo was like stepping into a small version of "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (the movie). It's charm lies in it's appreciation of the past. Front desk very helpful. (She recommended the restaurant Gastone for lunch--don't miss it--excellent!)... More

Stayed two nights three days at Hotel Universo in September this year. Excellent location. Clean and tidy hotel. Breakfast room a little small but no biggie. A very good hotel for travelers to stay. Excellent location from railway station.

We chose this hotel when visiting friends in Lucca as it was central and we didn't need a hire car. The room was high ceilinged and the bed large and comfortable. There was a good strong shower and plenty of toiletries. Storage in the entrance area was rather strange though. It was very high up and as we are both... More

I visited this hotel with 5 female friends in September. The hotel has an air of old fashioned elegance and could do with updating, but this would need to be done sympathetically to avoid spoiling the wonderful character of the building. We loved it, despite not having modern bathrooms, and everything was adequate for our stay. Our room was very... More

Just spent 10 days at this hotel and enjoyed every minute. The hotel is old but really has character. It is exceptionally clean and comfortable and I found the free breakfast of rolls, meat, cheese and fruit more than adequate. Because of previous reviews I knew the coffee machine in the breakfast room is not the best so brought my... More

My wife and I have recently returned from a further visit to hotel Universo set within the ancient walled city of Lucca, Tuscany, Italy. The hotel has a commanding position in the city center and like so many Italian building perhaps would benefit from some TLC it is the Grand Old Lady of Lucca and is absolutely wonderful.
