Casa Howard is an interesting hotel. Really different from the norm, but a nice place to stay. Very affordable option in the historic area, and most sites are walkable. Only complaint is that the hotel's air conditioning system had not been turned on due to the time of the year. Slept with windows open, and mosquitoes swarmed the room. Left... More

We couldn't have asked for a better price/quality relation. Not in Florence, not elsewhere in the world for that matter. We booked Casa Horward the night before we got there and we were very lucky because it was at a very low rate. On top of that they gave us an upgrade and we stayed on a gigantic room. I... More

Used to be a private casa but now a guest house. A little funky at first, but very stylish and gracious and friendly and warm. The couple, the Howards, have another b&b in Rome, and really know what they're doing. The staff is amazing (been with the family for decades) and go out of their way to make you at... More

We stayed at Casa Howard for a few nights, in the "hidden room". The room and entire place is spotless, the staff are friendly, and the location is ideal. We would have no problem recommending to friends and family to stay here if they came to Florence.

I styaed two nights at the hidden room, which is perfect for a couple, romantic, with a king size bed, the shower inside the room, and erotic pictures. Clean, great treatment, has a nespresso coffe machine you can use all the time, tea in the room. The staff is wonderful and helpful. Location is excelent, is close to the station... More

It was our 2nd trip to Florence but this time with friends. We stayed for four nights and our friends for two nights. It was my first ever stay in a Guest House and I wasn't sure what to expect. So I also having no other guest houses to compare against. We opted for the Black & White room which... More

I stayed here solo for 4 nights in March. Note that I was in the garden room, which is on the ground floor next to the owner's studio. Plus/minus points were: + great location. 2 min from Santa Maria Novella, 5 min from station, 10 min to central market, Cathedral, Ponte Vecchio. + good price. + fairly quiet. + good... More

We had read such good reviews and sadly we were a little disappointed. The location is good close to everything and the staff is the only reason I am giving it a 3 star as they were wonderful! But man did our room need a good scrubbing and a new coat of paint. The room was moldy and the shower... More

Stayed for three nights for a 40th birthday w/e. Having seen it recommended in a couple of respected guide books I was expecting to be really impressed, but instead was disappointed. We were given the black & white room, which is an odd layout and appears very tired. (Toilet flush sticks, paintwork peeling, soft furnishings worn). Staff were pleasant enough,... More

We stayed here for three nights on our trip. As it's mentioned, this is a guest house and not a hotel so there is not always someone at the front desk. The guest house is located about 5 minutes from the main train station and a quick walk into the major areas of Florence which was a big plus. The... More

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
