Since Venice is old, choosing a good hotel with a good price was hard. Our stay here was decent. Best price we could find. Only 5 rooms on the second floor. Didn’t feel like a hotel – felt like we were staying on the upstairs of someone’s home. The room was as pictured. The wifi was good. We arrived at... More

Great location. Was very impressed with the proximity to San Marcos Piazza and Rialto Bridge. Front desk concierge ( Sandra) was very attentive and friendly. I will highly recommend this hotel to anyone. Can't wait to go back !!

This place was a hidden gem 5 minutes away from Piazza San Marco. It is tucked away in one of the smaller streets but a great location indeed. Before our arrival the owner emailed instruction on how to enter the building since my arrival time was a bit late and provided us with lots of information regarding how to get... More

Located down a small alley this hotel was in a good location. We were close to St Marks square. The hotel emailed us the week before our arrival with specific directions on how to find the hotel which were very useful given GPS in the city of Venice only works 50% of the time and can't capture all the little... Set back from the grand canal but only 5 mins from St Marks square, this is perfect for those wanting to explore the heart of Venice. All clean, good facilities, warm & friendly welcome, with charming authentic Venetian decor. Can be noisy in the morning, as it's set amongst bars & restaurants & storage units, but we felt it added... More

The Locanda Cavanella is a small sweet little place. Under 10 rooms, good location, clean & friendly staff. My husband & I started our two week Italy trip at this hotel. I had emailed before our arrival to get best directions based on our travel from the airport. Selena replied with very detailed directions & said to call if we... More

Host very welcoming and contacted us prior to arrival to find out what time we would be arriving. Gave us door code as we were arriving "out of hours". Excellent location. Near to a great pizza/kebab bar. Very near the San Zaccaria waterbus stop.

2 minutes from Piazza San Marco and 1 block from the Grand Canal, this nice Locanda is a perfect place to stay in Venice. It's clean and have all you need and costs less than 1/2 of a similar hotel in Venice.

This is a very basic bed and Breakfast which was perfect for us. The place is clean, the rooms are clean and tidy. Breakfast is basic. The staff are very friendly. The hotel is in an excellent location close to san Marco square but out of the noise of tour groups.

Made reservations and prepaid from home or we would have looked for something else after the first night. Owner was personable and helpful but accommodations were minimal and breakfast was on the spartan side...packaged breads, sugary fruit drink...obviously cutting corners. We stayed in convents in Rome, Florence, and Orvieto and the breakfasts were comparatively sumptuous...variety of fresh breads, meats, cheeses,... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
