Good location, friendly staff, lovely classic room (surprisingly spacious) with a view of the canal. Good breakfast except for the coffee. We moved to the top room which had spectacular roof top views from the bed & the bathroom. Very characteristic. Overall a lovely place to stay but a bit expensive because of the Biennial.

This is the second time we have stayed here and this time we had an apartment. The apartment was beautifully furnished with genuine antiques and the windows overlooked the street. The apartment was great as we could make cups of tea and keep food and wine cool in the fridge. We could also make our own breakfast. Staff were friendly... More

We have just arrived back from Venice and I must say the staff at the Schiavani were excellent. After a mix up with our original booking at the San Zulian we were transferred to the Schiavani where we felt very warm and welcomed. There was a last minute alteration to our return taxi and one member of staff very kindly... More

Overdue about a year and some change. (April 2014). We originally had a different reservation to another hotel. When we arrived at the original hotel, they said they were overbooked, and that they were putting us up somewhere else. It was during the San Marco festival, so Venice was very full. I was suspicious and after a long flight, I... More

From our arrival to our departure the staff at this hotel were so friendly and helpful, our room was cleaned daily and the bedding and towels changed daily. The best start to the day was the breakfast/dining area we could not fault the service or breakfast. We would definitely recommend this hotel for it's locality/service/friendliness of the staff and other... More

I stayed here with my husband and we managed to find it using Google maps on our phone but don't know if we could have found it without. Venice is a complete maze and everyone will get lost at least once in Venice but I think that's all part of the experience. The hotel was in a brilliant location and... More

Stayed here with family in August 2012. Don't expect a brand new hotel with modern amenities. The room was spacious though, very spacious. Great location. I'd say its a short walk to San Marco Plaza - that's if you don't get lost as it's hard to get around Venice if you're not familiar. Good places nearby to eat. I'd stay... More

On the bright side, this apartment is close to everything in the beautiful city of Venice. However, rude personnel on the phone. Asked for a desk in advance and got none. Tiny apartment. No daily cleaning service, and they threw away my contraceptive pills when they came to clean. On the first day, they called to ask if they could... More

A quaint and comfortable little hotel, not too far from the main sights without being too busy or noisy. Unfortunately, due to flooding of one of the rooms we were displaced to their other hotel, which was frankly a fairly anonymous and uninteresting place. Unfortunate, as we enjoyed the one night we had there.

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
