My two friends and I have just returned from travelling around Italy, staying in different hostels. Venice was our final destination and as expected the most expensive. On our arrival the reception staff was friendly and polite, we then went up to our room to find it rather unpleasing. The window was broken and had paper covering a hole, it... More

The room although a bit small was very well decorated and clean. We had air condition which is very useful during summer. It is situated in a very good location. The staff were very friendly. We really enjoyed our stay there.

This hotel was the most expensive place we stayed whilst touring Europe but that's venice for you! After staying in some very clean hostels and hotels this was a bit of come down. Rooms were quite old fashioned and needed a deep clean. There was nothing massively filthy about it but it didn't seem clean. I had a quick check... More

Very central location gives this hotel it's stars. The staff were also polite. Yet sadly that is as far as my appreciation extends. The room, admittedly large, was veryThe hot and stuffy. To not install air conditioning in a climate where temperatures routinely rise above 30° seems a fairly massive failing on the part of any hotel. The bathrooms smelt,... More

Make sure to check that your room is air conditioned if you're visiting during the summer- it seems that Hotel San Maurizio and Residenza San Maurizio are separate properties in the same building, and the rooms in the former are not air conditioned. Our room was unbearably stuffy (and other occupants before and after us felt the same way) as... More

We knew this was a budget hotel and we didn't mind the small room and bathroom. The air con was a lifesaver but the hair dryer was broken and bizarrely the curtain didn't cover all of the window. Good location as we managed to walk the round the whole of Venice. Would recommend for people on a budget.

Me and my partner stayed here for 3 nights during our visit to Venice. The hotel was quite hard to find as there were construction works blocking the sign. The staff were friendly and helpful and showed us to our room which was nice. The air con was free and so was the WiFi which was great! Breakfast was a... More

This hotel is in an ideal spot only a 10 mins walk to St Marks square, about the same distance to walk from the closest water bus stop when arriving with luggage. The staff are really friendly and helpful. We had the junior suite which was a large impressive clean room with en suite bathroom, beds for 4 of us... More

Understanding that this was budget accomodation in a very expensive city we still would have expected basic functions like being able to shut and lock the door to our very small room, water for a shower which was at least warm, not to be woken up at 1:00am by people coming in trying to slam shut every door on the... When we booked this hotel we knew the it was basic. We had selected a double room with a shared bathroom. What we found was really shockingly bad. The room on the websites show light, spacious rooms but when we arrived we found a small, dank and musty room with very little light. Each time you entered the room you... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
