I only had two night in Venice, and it's an expensive city. Traveling on my I own, I chose Selvadego for its prime location and reasonable price. It was literally right behind San Marco by just a few steps. The neighborhood was too touristy for my taste but given the brevity of my visit, I wanted to be in a... More

This hotel is right off the square making it very convenient. There are no outward signs of the hotel on the street though. Don't let the tiny lobby fool you! The rooms are luxurious with beautiful, large bathrooms. Just a short walk to the Hotel Monaco for breakfast which was lovely and had a terrace facing the water.

Straight to the point-- Do Not Stay Here. Save your money and go to a hotel that has more hospitable staff and cleaner facilities. Stayed here one night and I'm glad it was only one night. The sheets were dirty, I felt disgusting after sleeping in the bed. The shower had mold. It was just horrible. The only good thing... More

I couldn't be happier with my stay at Palazzo Selvadego. The rooms are very spacious and the bathroom luxurious. Our shower had three separate shower hoses, which led me to believe Italians are kinky! Anyway, the hotel is a couple of steps away from Piazza San Marco, which is the main square of Venice, and where all the touristy stuff... More

We took the Alilaguna public bus from the airport to San Marco stop, 15€ each, one way, 1 hour. We checked in at the main hotel Monaco and the bell hop walked up to the Pal.Selvadego, 5 minute walk thru confusing turns on the first day, but by the next day we were navigating the streets and alleys easily. Our... More

The room was small and dank. The room was dirty. The mattress felt as though we were sleeping on a box spring. The bathroom smelled as though sewer gasses were emanating from the shower stall. The sheets were like nothing we ever encountered - they had the feel of sand paper. The floor above looked as though someone would fall... More

After staying at shoddy 3 star hotels throughout Italy we decided to upgrade to 4 star and boy are we happy we did, excellent location, very helpful and pleasant staff, the 2 minute walk to have breakfast at Monaco is worth it with the view from the deck is pleasant to start your day. Did have a minor irritating experience with... More

For the price we paid, it was OK. The hotels location is great, just minutes away from San Marco Square, the ferry bus, Hard Rock Cafe and the Grande Canal. Well, if you don't get lost its minutes away from the Grande Canal. We had most of the essentials in our room: safe, wardrobe, toiletries, etc. a hairdryer would have... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
