We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights while we were in Venice. We were quite jet lagged when we arrived in the early morning and the hotel was very helpful with striving to ready our room and make our wait pleasant. It was a great location to walk and see the sights; it is close to St. Mark's Square... More

We loved this hotel in Venice. Although we did not have a view, our room was spacious and we enjoyed opening our windows at night. No noise and great cool nights. This hotel was an old palace and had the tiniest elevators (worked fine and got you where you needed to go!) that added to the quaintness of it. The... More

When in Venice we normally stay at another hotel on the Grand Canal but having met up with a group of fellow Chaine des Rotisseurs members, the tour agent arranged us all accommodation in this hotel. Although clean and relatively presentable, we had rooms in the old building that were small, looked dated and heavily used. The first room we... More

We stayed at the Bonvecchiati for 4 nights. I initially wanted to stay at the Starhotels Splendid (another 4 star) but the prices kept jumping so we settled on Bonvecchiati. The hotel was great at responding to emails, and gave us several detailed options to get to the hotel from the airport. We took the Orange Aliliaguna boat (get off... More

We were celebrating our daughter Polly's 18th birthday and decided that Venice would be the perfect mix of history, culture, art, romance, shopping and eating to provide us all with an experience to remember. So, where to stay? We opted for Hotel Bonvecchiati, in the very heart of St.Marks, perfectly placed to breathe in the full flavour of the Venetian... More

The hotel is convenient to Piazza San Marco and the canal system. The rooms are small, but very clean and well kept. The glass chandeliers are extraordinary. The rooms and baths are well appointed. The beds are typical extra firm European variety. The breakfast is very good with both Europeans and American choices. The service is impeccable. The layout is... More

Nice location, about 4 minutes from Piazza San Marco, grocery is also nearby. From the room you have beautiful view to the canals. At night is very quite and you can sleep with open windows! The team in the hotel is very helpful and friendly!!!

We were upgraded to our room on the 4th floor and have photos that are framing quality. I am not sure if we would have been happy with our standard rooms as the room rate was very high - though I guess normal for Venice. The rooms were very big - bathrooms nice though beds not great - but also... More

Small rooms but decently furnished with lots of amenities. However, due to the size of the rooms, I'd suggest the management tear out the full bath and just install decent showers. Climbing over bathtub isn't nice. The staff welcomed us somewhat unfriendly. A warm welcome sure looks differently. Same goes for the service during breakfast. However, the location is superb... The hotel is right in the middle of the action. Just a short walk takes you to Piazza San Marco, restaurants, shops, museums and of course the gondolas. The hotel lobby is beautiful and spacious. The restaurant large and airy. Our room was beautifully decorated with blown glass chandeliers and sconces, but oh so tiny! We had a hard time... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
