An old and quaint hotel, not modern at all but pleasant with very friendly and helpful staff. The only negative were the steep stairs, one flight to reception and then another 1.5 to the bedrooms. For elderly people difficult as there was no one to help with suitcases and the steps are very steep.

What can I say that is positive about this hotel .... Location is great & the linen was clean. A very shabby hotel, room was around the corner & up very steep stairs. The bathroom was tiny & inconvenient with a bidet taking up valuable space. The building is very old & I do not think this is any excuse... More

I'll start with the positive - definitely close the water taxis and fairly centrally located. But if you can even find this place hidden in a back alley, then you're off to good start. The directions we were given did not lead us to to hotel so had to rely on our phone's GPS to get us there. Next -... More

Having booked a cruise through Pentravel on board the MSC Musica part of the package was a two night stay at the Hotel Lux in Venice. I am very glad they never added the De before the Lux because that it is not. We were housed in the annexe which was around the corner and had to lug our bags... More

We booked this hotel for one night. We arrived to a very steep staircase and very damp and smelly. We had to go up 3 flights of stairs with heavy suitcases, no such thing as a lift. The room had a bathroom that was dirty and very cracked tiles and the bath had a large repair on it. Set of... More

We spent 2 nights at this Hotel - it is extremely well located and very close to water taxis. There is no hotel lobby as such and you are immediately greeted with a massive flight of stairs that you have to somehow have to manoeuvre with heavy luggage to the reception area. Definitely not for people who are frail or... More

Without doubt the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. It was dirty, reeked of cigarettes and the reception we got was downright rude. Firstly I am currently walking with a stick and as you open the door you are met with a steep flight of stairs, covered by a dirty carpet. The receptionist was chatting on the phone and... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
