My wife and I began our 7 week trip to Italy by staying in this lovely quaint Hotel Castello in central Venice near St Marks square. The hotel is in two parts and we stayed at Locanda Correr down the alley from the main hotel. There is no lift and a climb up a steep set of stairs but the... More

We booked only one night in Venice, so we wanted to stay near St.Marco and this hotel is on really good location. Yes, it is a hard to find place, small rooms and no wi fi in the rooms (only on the ground floor), but for one night is ok.

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights at the beginning of our honeymoon. We booked the hotel because we were excited by its central location and traditional features. Upon arrival, we were disappointed to find that we had to carry our own luggage up four flights of stairs and although there were staff present, no one offered to assist... More

Hotel is situated close to St Marks Square. Although the rooms look outdated they are still reasonably comfy and you'll find most hotels in Venice are similar. Aircon worked, bathroom clean and breakfast was the usual continental spread. Staff friendly and helpful.

When staying in Venice we were looking for a hotel that had a real Italian feel to it which it did. However, the service could have been better and the room was far too small for two people. The hotel is very hard to find and is hidden down a dark side street. We arrived at the hotel early and... More

We really fell in love with this little hotel. Tucked into a quiet alley just a short walk from the water taxi, in a part of Venice that is next door to the more famous San Marcos area, it would be hard to beat the value and location. We had 24 hours in Venice before starting a cruise, and booked... More

We stayed here last week as part of our honeymoon and it was no where near the standard we were expecting. We should have checked the booking.com reviews before we let our travel agent put us here. No wifi in the rooms, you can get wifi between 7am-11pm-ish if you sit in the lobby. You have an option to buy... More

This hotel is in the st marcs square district and is in the Centre of everything. There is wifi in the eating area which is available from 7am -11.30pm. The staff are really friendly and speak pretty good English. The beds are pretty comfortable and the breakfast, although not 5 star is still very nice and hits the spot before... More

The hotel is superbly located: San Marco is five minutes away; a lively square full of restaurants and bars just 60 seconds from the door. Rooms are small but enough for your needs, staff are extremely helpful. There's a rooftop terrace, with views across Venice's rooftops, funnily enough, but we didn't use it. On the downside, our king size bed... More

Great location in castello which is a cosy area just 2 min walk from the St. Marcus square and Dodge palace. The intrance was a bit uncosy and the room was very small. But it was clean, quiet and with good aircondition. There was no alternatives for gluten allergics for breakfast. But all over the experience was wurth the price.

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
