My boyfriend and I stayed here for 4 nights in April and are very pleased with our stay. The hotel was conveniently located in a quiet area, not too far from the train station nor the St. Mark's Place. The rooms were nice and tidy with private bathrooms and free WiFi. The breakfast was served in our room at our... More

Is this our ninth consecutive Spring in Venice, staying at Locanda Gaffaro? I have actually lost count. The first time, I happened upon the Gaffaro when researching reasonably priced accommodation in Venice; the bookings after that have been by design, and my husband says he would continue to stay at the Gaffaro even if we won a lottery. To tell... More

Everything about this hotel is great. It has a great position: not very far from Venezia Santa Lucia station and close to everything you want to see in this wonderful town. The room was small but nice, warm and very clean. The bathroom was brand new with a great shower and everything else you need. Breakfast was served in the... More

We booked Locanda Gaffaro expecting a family run hotel with a welcoming smile and a font of knowledge of local traditions. While it is true the hotel is run by a family, we were greeted by the maid who was a bit put off perhaps because we arrived a little early (wanting to drop off our luggage). We didn't realize... We came to this hotel in August/September of 2000 for our honeymoon and loved it so much that we came again in August of 2013 and they even put us in the same room. The breakfast is included and so nice. It's a little hard to find at first but so worth it. It's clean and quiet. We will be... More

Goods - - The place is Tidy - Breakfast is served to your room, on a tray (limited quantity) - The bathroom is decent - Biggest +. Its a 6 minute walk away from Piazel Roma, which is the Bus stand and 10 mins away from the St.Lucia train station, making it easy for you to reach by walk, so... More

First & only hiccup was finding the place; we followed the directions exactly and, unbeknownst to us, we found it right away but perhaps because it was around 8-9pm (and according to a local who saw us looking around, apparently the power went out for a time) the place was not immediately inviting. In the end we called the mobile... More

The "locanda" (inn) is located in a very quiet corner of a quiet city in itself (as well as heartbreakingly beautiful), not far from the route that leads from the train station to "Campo Santa Margherita". As for the administrative function (check-in and check-out) it epends on the adjacent hotel "Al Malcanton". The room I have been given (a single... More

This very small hotel is an amazing place to stay! Its right out the way of all the tourists so you are really in with the locals which is a great experience and means you can have peaceful evenings if you wish! Although it may look a long way from the grand canal and St Marks etc it really isnt... More

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighborhood identity.
