So close to the frantic coming and going in a world class destination I would not expect help with the internet from front desk staff. We really had to print tickets to go from Venice to Saal Felden, Austria. No train rather bus and train. This front desk assisted us to the maximum.

Hotel Airone felt like the sad, underachieving brother of Hotel Canal, which Hotel Canal has been tasked to take care of but totally resents it. (Spoiler alert: we way overpaid for it at 140 euros a night, as that was the cheapest we could find on Venice when we booked. 60 euros would have been much more reasonable and left... More

Big pro is that its located on the Grand Canal directly across from the train station and directly adjacent to the Piazzale Roma (bus loop to get in/out of Venice and to the airport). The price isn't too bad (for Venice) but there are other cheaper, nicer 2-star places that include more amenities (like wifi and breakfast). I highly recommend... More

Hotel needed updating and a deep clean. Did not take breakfast options so cant give opinion. That said great value for money in venice. All atractions within walking distance with plenty of shops & eateries close by plus supermarket around the corner. Would recomened for solo traveler.

We arrived by train and this was directly across the canal from station. So easy to walk to with our luggage. We were lucky enough to have two family rooms that opened up directly onto the canal. We loved the location. Markets, restaurants etc. were everywhere without the enormous crowds that were in and around St Marks square. When the... More

Hotel Airone is a very basic hotel in Venice: the room was small but clean, the mattress was alright, the bathroom was tiny, the decor was basic and the small LCD TV was perched so high on the wall that it was impossible to watch. However, you do not go to Venice to watch TV, right? To find a room... More

The receptionist was very nice and helpful. However we were charged for map, and wifi. However the room was humid and had a terrible smell near the wash-basin, which felt like urine. Location is okay.

The hotel is situated exactly opposite to the station. It is visible and easy to step in even if you have bit big luggage. The reception is in hotel canal and one has to get the key from canal only. All the rooms are in first floor. The very first room where we have stayed is the beautiful canal view... More

Santa Lucia railway station is just on the other side of the main canal. It was very convenient for us to catch our early morning train. EUR 110. - for a double room with breakfast is very reasonable in this much overpriced city. Not a luxury and the lady who served breakfast was not in a top mood in this... More

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighborhood identity.
