Watch your belongings in this place. We locked our suitcases when we went out in fear of having things stolen. The owner can not be trusted and he has no shame in abusing you even in front of children. Steer clear of this dive at all costs. Spend a little extra money for pleasurable stay in Venice.

If you are after a pleasurable stay in Venice, then steer clear of this place. Although it is in a good location, we have not received such poor customer service during our European holiday. The owner of this hotel was the most rude and arrogant person we have come across in Italy. You don't expect to be abused by a... More

This older hotel can be a bit tricky to find, but once here the reception staff were pleasant enough. There are no tourist maps offered, so consider that as being the first pre-arrival requirement. The rooms are very dated and we only had a pedestal fan to try and keep us cool. Rooms are also quite small, although we did have... More

Understandably, my girlfriend and I came to Venice on a budget and Hotel Caneva fit the bill. The room was adequate and the bed was uncomfortable. The staff were not friendly and were not very helpful, you can't even get a map here. The breakfast was skimpy and barely worth the 5euro per person cost. Its saving grace is its... More

Hotel Caneva is a one star hotel in the heart of Venice; just a five minute walk from the Rialto Bridge. Admittedly, without taking a map it took me a lot longer than five minutes to find the hotel so make sure you are prepared! I was unsure what to expect because of the write up the place has on... Located between the Rialto Bridge and Piazza San Marco, a short lug from the Rialto vaporetta stop. The cost ($115 with bathroom ensuite) is budget priced, for Venice. $15 less for shared bathroom. The rooms are a bit tired, but it's an old historic building right on a canal. The breakfast was cheap and reasonably priced, which saves a lot... More

We stopped here for 3 nights and really couldn't fault it. We were on a tight budget when trying to find somewhere to stay in Venice and this hotel turned out to be perfect. It is very simple accomodation, the rooms aren't really anything to look at, but our room was spacious, clean and the bed was very comfortable. The... More

I and my wife stopped here for two nights over the bank holidays weekend and had a fabulous time. For our abound journey we flew into Treviso airport and used the coach service that takes you to the Piazzala Roma. The coach ticket cost 10 Euro each and the journey to the Piazzla Roma took about 40 minutes. Should you... More

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at the Caneva. We had a triple room with an ensuite. Very clean and adequately equipped. I have read the other reviews criticising the rooms etc, but I think they are doing it an injustice. For a budget hotel in such an old building I think it provides extremely good value.... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
