I stayed in Archie's House for one night, just because I missed the last train to Milan and needed an emergency accomodation on a very tight budget. I paid 21 euro for a place in a 4 bed dorm, with a private bathroom without heating (Venice in november is very cold and humid) and hot water. The only hot shower... More

Bar none the worst hostel I have ever stayed in. Everything was extremely dirty - I didn't even want to shower because the bathrooms were so unclean - and the mattresses were INFESTED WITH BED BUGS. I woke up with bites all over me every night, literally was eaten alive and am still scratching days later. There is no heating... More

I don't usually make a habit of writing negative reviews but I think the general public need to bed warned about this accommodation. We stayed four days and the one bathroom that is shared between the WHOLE fully booked hostel wasn't cleaned once. I informed a member of staff that there had been blood in the bottom of the toilet... More

This is a totally run-down place in need of serious maintenance and proper renovation. The walls are shabby, stairs gloomy, bathrooms unclean. And, also they don't have a kitchen; all they've is a microwave and paper plates and plastic cutlery. However, Archie (the owner) and his folks are nice and friendly, but that alone doesn't offset the price they charge.... More

It's a bit rough round the edges but we absolutely loved staying here, the staff/Archie's family who run it are unbelievably friendly and accommodating, the house is decorated with a shabby charm. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to feel safe and welcome, and likes ping pong! Unfortunately there isn't many kitchen facilities and maybe that could be... More

Luckily we only stayed 1 night in this place and that was out of sheer desperation due to every hostel in the city being fully booked. Only 1 member of staff, whilst he was nice, seemed incapable of managing the whole place by himself. The fact that there's only 1 filthy shower for the entire place is a joke, and... More

I was there a week ago and I can say my room was clean. The rest of the hostal was tidy and I think that it's one of the reason it seems cleanliness. Archie and his son are very nice people and helpful. If you don't have to live there and only stay for some nights,it's an hostal with a good... More

bathrooms look like they havent been cleaned in years, dust everywhere.. No kitchen, had to pay extra for a hot shower! No backpacker vibe either, this place needs a major makeover! Good location but kept walking past a diff hostel wishing I'd chosen that one instead!

Archies house is positioned on venice island off one of the main streets with resaurants bars etc. Archie himself and his son are nice and will happily help you with any questions or anything you need. The only downside is maybe the overall cleanliness, our room had dirty blankets and walls and the hostel had an overall shabby feel. But... More

Twice now Ive been in Venice and when i get there the list of accomodations they give you at the info center is so difficult to read. So the first time on my way to check one place out I saw a sign that said rooms. The rest is history, its run by a father and son, who are very... More

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighborhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighborhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
