Hotel Fontana is a cute little friendly family run hotel. It's not really fancy but the location is fantastic. We walked everywhere. Short distance from St. Marks and there are literally restaurants right in front of the hotel and if you tell them you are staying at Hotel Fontana they give you a discount. The breakfast wasn't elaborate but it... More

Hotel Fontana is perfectly situated a few minutes from the attractions of Saint Mark's Square and the San Zaccaria vaporetti stop, yet just far enough away to avoid the crush of tourists. My room was on the fourth floor, very quiet, and the elevator is fast. The room was clean and comfortable. The family members who manage the hotel are... More

The hotel is located in convenient walking distance from St. Marks and the staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was located just up from the lobby so was noisy in the early morning but overall the hotel was a great value.

What a lovely, friendly, family run hotel. Ok so it's not the most luxurious but the location is excellent and the staff couldn't be friendlier or more helpful. It's easy to locate when you come off the vaporetto from the airport (San Zaccaria), no problems with lugging cases through the streets or over bridges. It's literally a couple of minutes... More

Second visit to the Fontana for us. Persuaded our friends to come this time. 4 nights in this lovely, family run, hotel, close to St Marks Square. When we visit Venice again this is the place we will stay. Thanks again for helping us have a great visit to your fabulous city.....

This was our 9th visit to Venice and this is one of the most relaxing hotels we have stayed in. Friendly, helpful staff, family run hotel. Also has a lift which not all Venetian hotels do. The location is very central - just 2 bridges to Piazza San Marco and 2 bridges to Campo Santa Maria Formosa, which is a... More

Had an amazing stay here at the Hotel Fontana for two nights from the 24th March 2015. The hotel was in the most ideal location, a great base for venturing around Venice by foot. It was no further than a 3-5 Minute walk to St Marks Square and probably a 15 minute walk to the Rialto Bridge. Shops, restaurants and... More

Nice and quiet family run hotel, very close to San Marco square (approx 5 mins walk). Friendly staff (all speak excellent English). Rooms a bit old fashioned - but clean and somehow the style adds to the "real" Italian experience; nice and warm (in March); fresh towels every day. Basic continental style breakfast, cute little bar area behind reception (very... More

A quiet Hotel situated near San Zacharia square. I couldnt have wished for a better stay. Room was immaculately clean, towels on tap, none of this rubbish of saving towels to be green. The staff were wonderfully warm and friendly and breakfast more than adequate, I would have to give this hotel 10 out of 10. The owners are very... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
