The staff were super nice at this hotel. There was one receptionist who told us we couldn't eat an ice cream in the bar when there was clearly only us there and we just wanted to use the wifi (only available downstairs) but that wasn't a huge issue. The breakfast was a bit poor to be honest but in a... More

Hotel Fontana had a perfect location, close to St. Mark's area and the Piazza. The Hotel was an elegant older hotel, but exceptionally quaint and clean. Rooms were fine and it was small enough to be intimate with the owners and others. I definitely would recommend it for those looking to tour Venice.

We not only loved Hotel Fontana's wonderful location (close to San Marco's but not too close), We were absolutely enchanted with the warmth and hospitality of the family that runs it. Staying there made us feel connected to Venice and Italy in a more personal way. A special shout-out to Diego for accommodating us when a flight cancellation forced us... More

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Fontana. The room was very pleasant, breakfast good, access to beverages was handy, and the staff was quite friendly and helpful. The location was also favorable, since it was close to both the Grand Canal and St. Mark's square, so numerous restaurants andshops were close by, but not too close. Robert's, the restaurant... We had a great stay at the Hotel Fontana. Fantastic location within 2 minutes walking of the vaporetto stop and 5 minutes of Piazza San Marco. Wonderful hospitality. Helped with good restaurant recommendations and tickets to a Vivaldi show. The people are very genuine and friendly. We had a family room and it was a good size, comfortable and quiet,... More

We had the pleasure of staying at the Fontana twice, once in May prior to a cruise, and again a month later following other tours. We found this family owned and run hotel to be a joy. The location is ideal as it is close to the water transport, and only two little bridges away from the main tourist icons.... More

We were there June 6 and 7th. I had the daunting task of planning our family trip to Italy. I had no previous recommendations to work with so I spent a lot of time searching for accommodations online. I cannot tell you how many reviews I read to make my final choices. Thank God for sites such as TripAdvisor for... More

great little hotel. very close to walk from boat or taxi stop( from airport). probably one of the few hotels with elevator. breakfast is a joke but is included. they have wifi but only downstairs. it does not work in the rooms. rooms are nice and big, good size bathrooms. furniture is older than the hotel but it doesn't really... I spent 2 nights prior to our cruise. We pick the hotel for the location, 5 min to St-Mark square. The room was clean and ok for a 2 night stay. Breakfast was also included, which is great to maximize your time. It can be noisy at night because there is a small bar on the corner of the street,... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
