We had a great stay at the Hotel Fontana. Fantastic location within 2 minutes walking of the vaporetto stop and 5 minutes of Piazza San Marco. Wonderful hospitality. Helped with good restaurant recommendations and tickets to a Vivaldi show. The people are very genuine and friendly. We had a family room and it was a good size, comfortable and quiet,... More

We had the pleasure of staying at the Fontana twice, once in May prior to a cruise, and again a month later following other tours. We found this family owned and run hotel to be a joy. The location is ideal as it is close to the water transport, and only two little bridges away from the main tourist icons.... More

We were there June 6 and 7th. I had the daunting task of planning our family trip to Italy. I had no previous recommendations to work with so I spent a lot of time searching for accommodations online. I cannot tell you how many reviews I read to make my final choices. Thank God for sites such as TripAdvisor for... More

great little hotel. very close to walk from boat or taxi stop( from airport). probably one of the few hotels with elevator. breakfast is a joke but is included. they have wifi but only downstairs. it does not work in the rooms. rooms are nice and big, good size bathrooms. furniture is older than the hotel but it doesn't really... I spent 2 nights prior to our cruise. We pick the hotel for the location, 5 min to St-Mark square. The room was clean and ok for a 2 night stay. Breakfast was also included, which is great to maximize your time. It can be noisy at night because there is a small bar on the corner of the street,... More

Just about to depart our 3 night stay at the hotel which is family run and the people are lovely. All reviews pretty much say the same. We were in room 2 right at the front we did have wifi access in our room. I would have sacrificed this for a room in the back, we had noise from tourists... More

By no means a luxury hotel, but in a great location for the biennale and sightseeing. Comfortable, clean, spacious room. Great to have the bar area in the evenings to relax or work in with a drink. My only concern was security - as the room keys were very easily accessed from behind the front desk. Very friendly staff.

Hotel Fontana is a cute little friendly family run hotel. It's not really fancy but the location is fantastic. We walked everywhere. Short distance from St. Marks and there are literally restaurants right in front of the hotel and if you tell them you are staying at Hotel Fontana they give you a discount. The breakfast wasn't elaborate but it... More

Hotel Fontana is perfectly situated a few minutes from the attractions of Saint Mark's Square and the San Zaccaria vaporetti stop, yet just far enough away to avoid the crush of tourists. My room was on the fourth floor, very quiet, and the elevator is fast. The room was clean and comfortable. The family members who manage the hotel are... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
