We always try to stay at the Messner when we visit Venice. We stay in the hotel itself, room had a balcony overlooking the Canal. The location of the hotel is great- just a short walk to the Academia bridge, a truchetto stop, the Guggenheim, and lots of restaurants . And all this without the crowds or noise of Venice.
