La Residenza hotel, used to be a palazzo, very nice restored , so you you can taste the former glory. Well situated,in a quiet piazza, close to San Marco but still easy to move along the main attractions. Reasonably priced.

Staying a La Residenza in Venice felt like visiting royalty centuries ago. The décor was authentic and grand. Our room was comfortable, clean and updated with modern bath facilities. The location was wonderful, just a few minute walk to the Grand Canal, yet in a quiet location. We had several good restaurants just a few steps from our door. The... More

I have read some criticism of this hotel regarding price, breakfast, and austere rooms. However, we did not find this to be true at all. The rooms are not cheap but then this is Venice. The breakfast included coffee, tea, juices, cereal, fruit, yogurt, and delicious bread. For those expecting a huge American breakfast, you will be disappointed but we... More

This hotel is on a lovely square that is slightly off the beaten path so it was quiet, but still within easy walking distance of the sights. Every morning we enjoyed breakfast in a beautiful dining room - evidence of the palace that it used to be. Every afternoon we enjoyed seeing the local residents sitting in the square -... More

We stayed here just a couple of nights, perfect location in a quiet square only minutes from the "action" of St Marks and close to the Arsenale vaporetto stop. Our room was small but comfortable and we did choose just the "standard" room type; there was a/c, shower-room perfectly adequate and pretty period style furniture. Receptionists were courteous and helpful.... More

It is located in a historical residence in a square not far from the Arsenal boat station. The room is clean and comfortable but not exceptional. Breakfast is poor, as usual in Italy. It is a bit pricey for what you get, and the service at the reception is not friendly.

I stayed for two nights, in two separate rooms: double and a single, both for one night, as they were the only available. The hotel is located on a quite square, nestled behind the main tourist area of Venice, but you'd never know that from the hotel. Restaurants and shops are around, should you want to stay close, but I... More

The Hotel is in a stately former mansion and the owners have retained its period decor. The location is just far enough from the main tourists sites to feel like you are staying in an actual neighborhood. In fact, we spent part of one afternoon sitting in the plaza and watching the neighborhood kids, parents and grandparents playing in square.... More

We stayed here in January 2009. Trip Advisor only offers dates back to 2014 in its review form. Granted, Venice was deserted in it's low season after the "crash of 2008" but we loved it. The Murano glass chandelier in our room was beautiful. Our room was small but clean and sweet. The main reception area/breakfast café was beautiful. Probably... More

Only fifty yards from Alilaguna and Vaporetto stop Zattere. Entrance on Giudecce canal. Quiet room with private next door bathroom. Bathrobes and slippers provided. In room safe. Part of La Calcina Hotel which is next door and where breakfast is served. Room was a good size and very clean as was the bathroom. Only problem was the lack of air-conditioning.... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
