We stayed for three nights in early May. The location is great - only minutes from San Marco, and from Arsenale boat stop. Easy to walk or vaporetto everywhere. Lovely location on small quiet plaza. The public areas of the hotel are very well maintained and like Rick Steeves says, make you feel like you are staying at the Doge's... More

La Residenza faces a lovely square that fills with kids playing soccer and grandmothers visiting each afternoon. The building is impressive outside while the main lobby/breakfast room is spectacular. Although you are only a few hundred feet from the Riva Schiavoni, and although tour groups do walk through the square, you are away from the crush of tourists, and close... More

Stayed for four nights in a triple room. Very large room and overlooking the square. Grand piano in the reception area; a little French girl treated us to a recital one afternoon. Relatively easy to get to from the San Zacariah vaporetto stop (you do have to cross 3 bridges - up the stairs and then down the stairs) but... More

During a visit to Rome, my friends and I made a last minute decision to add an excursion to Venice. La Residenza was chosen and turned into a wonderful idea. We were provided explicit instructions making the palazzo easily located from the nearby vapparato stop. The hotel is charming with a beautiful but comfortable reception area. There was plenty of... On a recent trip to Venice, we stayed for the second time at Hotel La Residenza. Located on a quiet little piazza off the Grand Canal and just a short walk from St. Mark's Square, the hotel is beautiful. The staff is very courteous and helpful. The rooms are spacious, clean and well worth the money.

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights. We loved it. Service was fantastic and the location was great. But the star of the show was our room. It was a corner room, looking out over the square and was gigantic. Easily one of the largest rooms we had while in Europe. There was also a fantastic chandelier in... More

This charming hotel in a neighborhood palazzo provided a great home base for exploring Venice. It is a few blocks from a vapparato stop, a 5min. walk from St Mark's square and close by good restaurants. The room was comfortable, although the beds were hard. The main reception room where breakfast is served is truly from another century. As others... More

This very nice hotel in a former palazzo was a perfect location, not 10 minutes walk to San Marco, but well off the beaten tourist track. It sits on one side of a small square which the locals (seniors and bambini) frequent in the early morning and late afternoon. Local eating and drinking places abound. The rooms are small, but... ouah... I wake up in a Venetian Palace dating back to 15th Century, which belonged to a doge. Hotel excellent situation, 5 mn from Arsenal, 8 mn from S. Marco square. Excellent breakfast given in the piano nobile / reception area of the palace, with huge decor original from 17th century. My room was opening on campo (square) with Chiesa... More

Our room was large (for Italy) with a large bathroom and very comfortable. It's not difficult to get to and the proximity to S. Marco is great. The breakfast is fair, but adequate. The charming decor and the helpful staff are the best part of this hotel. I'll definitely stay here again. My 13 yr old nephew didn't love this... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
