Excellent position for getting anywhere, lovely helpful staff, Dorsoduro is a nice peaceful, central area. The rooms are clean but a little 'brown' i.e dated (there was a strange 'shower curtain' hanging towards the door). We chose a room 'without a view' (actually we did have a sideways glimpse of The Guidecca) so it was dark but that really didn't... More

Lovely hotel, easy to get to and central. Short walk to St Mark's Square and the heart of Venice but very quiet in the evening. Stayed in one of the superior rooms which was at the front of the hotel with a stunning view over the canal and a private terrace. Staff friendly, rooms clean, highly recommended.

Pensione La Calcina is an ideal place to stay. ‘Good value’ among some eye watering Venice hotel prices, it has an open location in Dorsoduro on the Guidecca Canal. Easy to reach by 5.1 / 5.2 vaporetti direct from the airport bus. Friendly staff. Plus points: Location - walking distance from just about everything. Good staff. Good breakfast buffet. Clean... good location, close to airport boat and vaporetto syop. really nice and helpful staff. rooms are great. however, no elevator. but i always stay there and would stay there again and again. good morning breakfast buffet, better than a croissant and coffee: fruit, croissants(yes),cheesecake, cereal, boiled eggs, ham and cheese and of course coffee or tea and juice

Dear Sir/Madam, thank you for your review. To have a nice breakfast is important to start the discover of Venice in the right way! As you can imagine, it is so difficult to introduce an elevator in the historical buildings of Venice, but I think I can tell you a small secret: we are studying a solution to have an... More

A warm, hospitable gem of a pensione in a quiet location on the Canale della Guidecca yet only a few minutes from The Academia. This pensione offers most helpful multi-lingual receptionists, wonderful breakfasts in a canal facing, delightful space and a home away from home.

La Calcina has a great location, charming rooms, many with great views and a good restaurant. Its history with art critic andl historian (THE STONES OF VENICE) John Ruskin fascinates-- BUT -- it is the staff and their warm, even charming service that makes La Calcina so special it competes with the uniqueness that is Venice.

We stayed at La Calcina for 4 nights in March 2015. We were very pleased. Although it is an old building (as they all are in Venice) it's very well maintained, very clean and quiet. The staff is friendly and helpful. The restaurant is good with a good view. It's away from the crowds but close enough to reach all... More

The rooms were on the small side but the views are lovely, right on the Grand Canal. The hotel has the best hot chocolate which we had out on the veranda in front of the hotel. We are happy we stayed here. We would stay there again.

LA Calcina is in a quiet yet convenient location for Venice sightseeing. Located facing the Giudecca Canal in easy walking distance to all the main attractions and only a couple of minutes walk to the Vaporretto stop for journeys to further locations. Hotel breakfasts are excellent and offer inside or outside tables dependant upon weather. La Calcina is ideally placed... More

We stayed at La Calcina from Feb 13 to Feb 18 2015. This was a very good location. It is a 20 second walk from the Zattere ACTV stop In Dorsoduro. This means quick access to the vaporetto for transit to San Marco attractions. Or you can walk less than 5 minutes to the Grand canal to use the ACTV... More

Staying in Dorsoduro / Accademia

Neighborhood Profile
Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighborhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighborhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbors exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.
