Easy access from Marco Polo airport by direct water bus Alilaguna blue line, which takes about 1h20mins, then arriving at Zattere station where La Calcina is just on the right side. Nice welcome by the front desk, the reception area is combined with the restaurant. We had a room on the first floor, with 2 windows one looking out to... More

I had a reservation for Nov. 10-13 - I became suddenly and seriously ill - had to go to hospital- and had to cancel my trip. The hotel charged my credit card for 3 nights, even though I sent a copy of the hospital record, with my doctor's recommendation that I postpone my trip. The Manager refused to make an... More

Dear Mrs. Carol, we are obviously so sorry for your illness problems and we wish you a prompt recovery. Considering that the reservations at the last minute are practically disappeared, we are very damaged from all the cancellations received just few days before the arrival, because it means that the room will most probably remain free. All the cancellations that... More

We were welcomed back to La Calcina like family by the cheerful and efficient staff - this is our fourth visit in 10 years. We enjoy the location which is off the main tourist track, but easily accessible to all points of interest. It maintains the highest standards in a calm, unpretentious manner that is most appealing.

This was one of my favourites for lunch on a sunny day, enjoying the breeze from the Giudecca Canal. Although the nanagement is now French, the menu is as imaginative As before with plenty of choice for vegetarians. Closed on Mondays like many other restaurants. What are they thinking, that tourists should fast on Mondays?

The welcome was excellent, the renovations are perfect and look forward to seeing it finished next year. The food is good and everyone wants to please and are extremely helpful. Will be returning next year! Not far from anywhere and lovely being on the Guidecca Canal, a great location. Old building but gets you into the feel of Venice immediately.... More

We stayed here eight years ago and had a wonderful room with the view of the Il Redentore that we never forgot. We booked ten months in advance to get the same view again for our twentieth wedding anniversary. I suggest you book well in advance to make sure you get one of the double rooms with a view as... We stayed here on the recommendation of a friend and we were delighted with our choice. We booked several months in advance as we had been told it gets booked up very quickly. We asked for a double king size bed front room with a view of the Guidecca Canal and we were given room 2 which was a corner... More

This was a great location, on the Guidecca Canal, so away from the crowds and hustle and bustle of the Grand Canal and St Mark's Square, but only an easy walk or easier vaporetto ride to them. Staff were friendly and helpful. Our room had a great view - especially of the cruise ships as they slid along the canal.... More

The art critic John Ruskin chose well when he stayed at the Pensione La Calcina back in the 1850s (though with his prejudice against classical-style architecture he would not have appreciated its view of Palladio's elegant Redentore church as I did). Located on the Giudecca Canal, La Calcina enjoys the tranquillity of the Dorsoduro quarter yet is only a few... More

The pensione has no elevator like many in Venice. Our room was one of only two on the fourth floor. Room 42 is not only very small (queen bed, small desk, 2 chairs, very small bathroom, limited closet space, tiny TV), but the shower is the size of a large phone booth. If you turn to face the curtain that... More

Staying in Dorsoduro / Accademia

Neighborhood Profile
Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighborhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighborhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbors exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.
