Finding the hotel was easy with the map received from the hotel by email. (I arrived by vaporetto to Rialto stop.) The location was just perfect near both Rialto and St Mark's Square and still it wasn't too busy. The single room was small, especially the bathroom, but one doesn't really want to stay in Venice anyway. The service was... More

The Hotel Serenissima has very competitive rates, despite being right in the center of things. Indeed, it could hardly get any more central in Venice, being mere steps from St. Mark's Square yet close to Rialto. The hotel lobby is very charming with its rustic wooden ceiling, Venetian lion, and hotel dog. A collection of real paintings is on display... More

A wonderful family run Italian hotel, 5 mins walk from St Marks Sq. The staff are so friendly and helpful. A great selection is offered at breakfast including scrambled eggs. The rooms offer basic, comfortable accommodation with en-suite shower room - both spotlessly clean. When we discovered our flight home had been cancelled due to fog in the UK the... More

I stayed here on a university trip to see the Venice Biennale. The hotel was chosen by my tutors organising the trip. I was not disappointed; the bathrooms were really nice, the rooms were pretty, no noise, and breakfast in the morning (included) was great! Loads of different foods and a selection of juice and fruit. Wasn't in there very... More

What a delightful little hotel, the staff are so friendly and couldn't do enough for you. We were up on the second floor, there were no lifts but the staff carried our luggage for us. The location is close to everything, the breakfast was plentiful and so tasty. They even had a couple of English speaking channels on the TV... More

The general location of the hotel is great - close to St. Mark's Square. However, to get to the hotel, you have to walk up and down stairs to get over a canal. We had very heavy suitcases, which made it difficult getting to the hotel. We didn't know that we could hire porters to transport our suitcases until we... More

Such a delightful hotel, very close to St Mark's and handy for the grand Canal and it's water buses. The rooms are very sweet, beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean and comfortable, the walls are full of interesting art and the breakfast is divine! Staffed by charming and helpful people, it was a joy to spend three nights there. I'm looking forward... More

our room was on the fourth floor and there was no elevator but I didn't mind. Note, if you have walking problems, you may want to ask for a lower floor. The room was clean and the staff very friendly and helpful. I would stay here again. The location was only minutes from San Marco plaza and in the middle... More

This hotel, although hard to find tucked away in the back streets, was a great find. It was only a short walk from either San Marco or the Rialto. The rooms are clean and comfortable, although perhaps a little dated, but that didn't matter, because the staff were fantastic! So cheerful, helpful and polite. The matriarch owner didn't speak English... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
