We were pleasantly surprised with the location of this place. The staff was extremely kind and helpful (we booked several tours and excursions through the front desk). We had a nice breakfast each day, and my room had a pretty view. Some of the rooms have been renovated, and the ones in front with a view of the Grand Canal... More

This is a great hotel in a superb location. We were in Room 705 in the second building and what a room! The room is in the eaves of the roof....original beams abound and the overall floor space is large with leather furniture in typical Italian style. On a practical level you have to careful not to hit your head... More

Well we booked this hotel through Expedia as it was recommended. After I booked I read more reviews and found out that you might end up with a room in a different building at the back street and guess what, it happened to us. Thankfully I was prepared after all we had booked an economy room! (Not by choice only... More

Beautiful hotel, very ornate, friendly staff, excellent food and polite service, can eat outside even in wet weather, can walk to all major attractions with ease, try and book room with lagoon views as that would have made it extra special but don't worry if you are there for only a couple of days this is just the best you... Just returned from 5 nights in this fabulous hotel. We requested a view of the lagoon and upgraded to a Second floor suite. The room, recently refurbished was a delight, two balconies overlooking St Georgio, very comfortable bed, lovely furniture, marble bathroom with rain shower juccuzzi bath etc, Murano glass pieces in backlit display cases and well stocked hot drinks... Have just returned from a two night stay at this wonderful hotel. We stayed in room 301 which has been recently renovated. I loved the decor of the room which led onto a rather small balcony with the most amazing panoramic views overlooking the lagoon; imagine stepping into a postcard! Staff were first class; friendly and efficient at the reception.... More

We have just returned from a three night stay at this beautiful hotel overlooking the lagoon in Venice. After initially being disappointed with our room having booked a junior suite with lagoon view and finding it situated on the first floor overlooked by all the tourists arriving at the ferry landing, we were delighted to be offered an alternative room... I was here over twenty years ago before they renovated and I liked it so much, I returned. I was not disappointed. The view of the lagoon basin is always interesting, so rooms with that view are certainly worth taking. I had a junior suite, which was not exactly large, but had a balcony, so the trade off was good.... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
