My husband and I have just returned from a lovely weekend in Venice. We stayed at the Hotel Ateneo & thoroughly enjoyed our time there. The hotel is tucked away so this did make it hard for us to find (although I'm sure anyone who has ever visited Venice can vouch at getting lost at one point or another). Staff... More

The hotel was very clean and presentable and hidden away from the busy streets. Only a 5 minute walk from San marco and the grand canal. The young man on reception was very helpful. We had a nice clean room with a view of a canal, well worth asking for that. On the down side the breakfast want very good,... More

Friendly staff, beautiful decor, delicious food and an unforgettable vacation are only a few of the memories of our stay in Hotel Ateneo. We only had the priviledge of staying there for 3 days, but our expectations were blown away. It is perfectly situated, so beautiful from the in- and outside. I especially loved the decor : big chandeliers, colorful... More

We went there for our honeymoon. After our experiences at the wedding celebration (my other review) we thought this a good idea to get our heads clear. It was a good decision. The hotel is in the middle of Venice, you only need five minutes to St Marcs square and all other sights are also reachable. The rooms are small,... More

We walked from the water taxi, about 10mins max through winding streets a beautiful squares, came to a pretty courtyard at the front of the hotel and was greeted by a young man who couldnt do more to help. Very nice reception and we up graded to a room overlooking the... More

We got slightly (ok, a little more than slightly) lost on our way here from the ft.e Nova port because google maps had a street mislabeled. Once we got to the square near the hotel we saw a sign pointing us to the hotel. The bathroom ceiling is low (when i stand straight up in the shower my head brushes... More

We wanted a quad room so did not have a huge choice of hotels and were delighted to find Ateneo. The location was ideal close to San Marco and lots of restaurants. Our room was outside the main hotel but this was not an issue. In fact I liked the separate entrance and privacy. The wifi was weak however which... More

Very nice old hotel located in the central of the the city center and in the middle of all attractions, although its very quite. They serve delicious breakfast. Hotel rooms are small, but very clean and comfortable. The staff are so friendly, specially "Stefan" he was so helpful and kind.

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
