My husband and I really enjoyed this hotel. We were on the top floor, no view, but it was still nice. There's no elevators, but we didn't mind since we are young and in good shape. I liked the old-time looking decorations and the room stayed cool despite the heat wave when we were visiting. The location was awesome, right... More

The hotel is right opposite Venice's main train station - Santa Lucia and only a 5 minute walk from the bus depot. The staff are friendly and helpful and the breakfast is plentiful. The rooms are a little grubby but clean with hot water and good air-conditioning. I would stay there again but definitely ask for a room with a... More

We stayed in room 210, which was clean and comfortable. Breakfasts were continental and plentiful and of good quality. The hotels location is excellent for train station, vaporetti, Grand canal and within easy walking distance to city centre. The room would benefit from having tea/coffee making facilities.

i liked the fact that this hotel was a little away from the main tourist areas. And being close to the train station was perfect for us. Other than having to carry luggage upstairs I couldn't fault the place. Clean, quiet, air-conditioned, helpful staff and a nice simple breakfast. I'd come back here.

Due to circumstances we were forced to stay a night in this hotel. Only in the separate universe that is Venice, this kind of hotel is considered as three stars. I found the rooms past their best, bordering on shabby. In our room the light didn't work in the bathroom and I found out probably why in the morning when... More

If you want a proper Venice experience then this is the place for you. Small, vintage and chic. Situated right on the Grand Canal, across the way from the train station and a 2 minute walk from the main bus depot, the location could not be in a better spot. The staff are friendly. The buffet breakfast is limited but... More

My friends and I went to Venice for a four night trip and stayed at this hotel. Location wise it was perfect. Right next to the bus depot from airport. (Number 5 bus). Takes about a 15 min journey. Also next to the water bus service which is worth using. We got a 48 hour pass for 30 euros and... More

The two of us spent 5 nights in this hotel that was situated very close the railway station and bus depot. The people at the reception were most helpful, informing us of how to get to places and when asked, told us of a very nice restaurant where we had some delicious meals. They offered an extensive breakfast and the... More

Just went to Venice. Wanted to stay on the Grand Canal with a canal view. Looked at all the different hotels and at what cost. Hotel Canal (aka Hotel Canal and Walter) was one of the more affordable hotels on the grand canal so I booked here. Well, I must say, I had a great time and love the place... More

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighborhood identity.
