I loved this hotel! It is conveniently located to public waterway transportation and a leisurely walk to the gondolas and St. Marks square. There is an extremely nice park right behind the hotel with a play area for children, a farmacia [pharmacy] and places to eat. The room was very nice! It was clean and well lit. Also, the hotel... this will be our third stay in this lovely hotel. Our last stay saw a hurricane coming across the lagoon and directly over the hotel. I was injured by a flying planter from the hotel steps. The staff couldn't do enough to make sure I was bandaged and ready to leave for the airport. Friendly and helpful team.

This hotel is a 20 minute walk from St. Marks square. We loved it because it is walking distance but very quiet and calm. This will be our GO TO hotel going forward. Nicely appointed inside and out. Great breakfast as well.

Despite being about a 30 minute walk along the grand canal to all the activity, this hotel is perfectly located. It's a very quiet neighborhood and you can experience local life in a very quaint setting. Our water taxi dropped us practically at the doors and we checked into a beautiful and very comfortable room. We walked to St. Mark's... More

We spent three nights here in May as part of a Great Rail Journey (who are excellent, by the way). It's away from the hustle and bustle of the more touristy areas but is lovely. It's a converted monastery with the conversion done to a high standard and sympathetically. The staff are friendly, polite and attentive. The rooms are spacious,... More

The Sant 'Elena turned out to be a good choice. Its location next to the garden of the biennale made for a lovely walk into the main town each morning, and at night we took the vaporetto. The rooms are sleek, which is a welcome relief from classic Venetian excess, and the beds are very comfortable. Breakfast was generous; there... More

Although this lovely, contemporary, efficient hotel was a 35 minutes walk from the centre of Venice (San Marco Square) it nestles in the greener part of the area where sailing boats are moored and located in a quiet street a few metres walk to the water taxis. We found it just right for a brisk daily walk to all the... More

We stayed here for 3 nights over the May bank holiday weekend. The hotel is very quiet and we certainly slept well. We had a room on the first floor which was comfortable with a good bathroom and comfortable sofa to relax and watch the TV at the end of the day. Would agree with a previous reviewer that it... Located in a quiet residential neighborhood and the rooms are clean although small by US standards. The "do not disturb" sign was on our door because we don't like anyone entering the room while we were out, but upon return realized that the room was entered into and cleaned in our absence. Upon bringing this rude violation of privacy up... More

Dear Guest from Durham, we are very sorry you evaluated our BEST WESTERN PREMIER Hotel Sant’Elena only taking into consideration the “do not disturb” sign issue. You are right when you say “do not disturb" is a universal understanding that must be respected in every hotel, but disturbing someone means that someone is in the room and you were not... More

Recently got back from a 3 night stay here. We had one of the ground floor rooms in the courtyard and couldn't fault it. Excellent location as Sant' Elena is very quiet, but it's only a 20 minute walk to St Marks or a 1 minute walk to the Vaporetto stop. Staff were friendly and the breakfast was really good.... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
