Though I knew that the B&B was on the mountain side away from the local town, my first impression as I drove up the windy road followed by walking up the steps was that I had made a mistake booking the B&B sight unseen. My first impression was wrong.

Lou and Leo's hospitality, the surroundings, and the B&B in general turned me around before day's end. The walk up the stairs and the drive along the road became second nature and didn't bother me one bit. Don't worry about lugging your luggage up-down the stairs as Lou has a 4x4 to take them up for you. And, if your in reasonable health, the steps are not a problem to go up/down.

Our girls loved the small pool, the cats, and the dog. They had a great time playing with Lou and Leo's kids.

Lou and Leo are great hostesses//host and really made us feel welcome. Not only do they provide great travel tips, we had some great conversations on a variety of topics either during the morning breakfast or the evenings when we had asked Lou/Leo to cook dinner.

The B&B externally is more on the rustic side since there is some agriculture that's done around the building, but, the room was clean and was a comfortable size. There was no air conditioning, but, during the evenings there was a breeze that kept the room and us cool. I was concerned that there were no bug screens on the window, but, I don't ever recall being bit while I was in the room. That being said, we never sprayed any bug repellent on ourselves during our entire stay. The room had a wardrobe and a dresser for storage, a double bed, a bunk bed. fridge, table with a couple of chairs. There wasn't much storage in the bathroom.

The B&B is about 1/2 hour drive away from Chiavari where you can park about 400 meters from the train station for free. This is convenient as you can take a train into Genoa or the Cinque Terre towns to explore. The drive on the coastal road towards Genoa is quite pretty and there are numerous towns to visit along the way.

For anyone that has a rental car and wishes to get away from the usual 'hotel in town' , this is the B&B for you.

the long & windy drive up through the hills was well worth it...what a view & what a welcome..our room looked over the valley, was really nicely decorated & so clean & fresh!
Every morning we ate breakfast ..that cherry jam! out on the terrace watching Pluto chase the cats & the cats chase the lizards...eagles flying overhead & hearing woodpeckers & cuckoos in the chestnut woods behind.....a really wonderful place to return to every day ..so much to explore, The Cinque Terre is only a train ride away..we took the boat back!..and we had splendid days walking in PortoFino & the Regional Park...but after all those tourists it was always a real pleasure to climb those stone steps back 'home' to Castagnola 64

Our family of four loves to get off the beaten path, and we were thrilled by Castagnola 64. Driving up the mountain was a kick (among the provided directions: "turn right at the yappy dogs" and "if you run into a farmer, just wait and he'll reverse"), and finding a top gourmet restaurant just a couple km away (La Brinca) was a joy. The many stairs, winding through vineyard, only added to the charm. Even the animals were a pleasant diversion (three new kittens, slightly aggressive possibly senile dog, quick lizards on stone begging to be chased). I only wish we'd chosen to visit in a cooler month. I think it would have made all the difference. Keeping windows open wasn't enough to cool the room at night and none of us slept very well. We brought a fan but to no avail. The very small pool allows a cool plunge in the daytime. Breakfasts by Lu were lovely and varied; dinner one night on the terrace simple, delicious. I think one evening we had Swedish, French, Dutch, German, British and American English all spoken at once. Maybe Danish too.
Some quirks, like don't flush ANY toilet paper; pay in cash; huddle on the terrace in a 10'x10' space for WiFi; and since there's not really a front desk sometimes it's hard to locate one of the owners. But you wouldn't choose 64 if you didn't mind quirks. Go in the fall. Or spring.

Thank you for choosing us for your stay. We are still laughing about Noah being described as aggressive and possibly senile, he is only 2 years old and really quite a softie but unfortunately is just nervous of certain people so tends to bark until told off :) We agree with you about the heat , you stayed during the hottest week on record since 2003 and I think everyone suffered during those days. Air conditioning is not a healthy option for us or our european guests but unfortunate for you. Luckily 95% of the summer nights are cool and fresh. Sorry to hear you felt the room was a tight fit but as you'd requested in advance for an extra bed for your teenagers as they don't sleep well in bunks beds, it was, I imagine not as spacious as it usually is. Thank you for abiding by our request of not flushing TOO MUCH toilet paper, there is no mainline sewage up in the hills but also, we are very proud of our GREEN LEADERS SILVER AWARD and try to do everything to save the planet :) You didn't have to pay in cash but to avoid expensive commission rates with credit card via paypal, we thought we were doing you a favour, so our sincere apologies for that. Thank you so much for your feedback , you are so right about us being a place of quirks and we were pleased to hear such good words on your departure but what a pity you felt you couldn't share the negative points with us in person as well but thank you , we're sure some people will find them very useful. We hope the rest of your stay in Italy was pleasurable.

Farmhouse Castagnola is a little bit far away from everything. In the first route, the road was cut off due to collapse, and the other possible routes fortunately was okay. Sure, it was a narrow and complicated path along the mountainside and co-driver was clearly tense.

Eventually we got across was no longer to gain long and bumpy stone steps. Reception was very friendly, we were very welcome, and we were directed to our room. After a long journey were offered refreshments and the opportunity to attend the dinner.

It was just what we needed.

Owner couple's cooperation in our table floated a delicious meal. Delicious appetizer, tasty main course and right on heavenly dessert. Master of the house, which worked as a cook, brought to offer a glass of Grappa.

Awesome. Best dining complex throughout the two-week trip to Italy.

Before going to bed, we had a little walk in the area above the place of accommodation in the road where the fireflies flew against the silhouette of the mountains. Just like in a fairy tale.

It is clear that sleep interfered with none of the extra sound and scene could have been more beautiful. The mountain contours and stars in the sky.

After a stay of one night in the fabulous place, it was time to move on. All in all, this was an unforgettable experience and I can recommend the place to anyone who manage to climb 150 steps. Price level was very reasonable and the whole place is absolutely fantastic.

Thanks again to owners of great service, excellent food and a wonderful experience.

One of the best holidays ever! Go there! We stayed at Lu and Leo´s place for a week with our 2 kids 10 and 14 - we all loved it, the pool, the food, the view, the rooms, the dogs and cats, the owners - everything! We will be back to our place, up the stairways to heaven.

We stayed here in July while I was researching my forthcoming guide to Liguria that will be published by Bradt in spring 2012. I couldn't recommend this place more highly. The whole experience is really Ligurian from start to finish even the wild boar outside the window in the middle of the night!
We were with our 13 year old twins and had a really huge room. The fridge was an added bonus as I tend to drive with half my kitchen in the back of the car.

A beautiful B&B with friendly hosts. Once up the narrow & twisty road (I really do mean ultra twisty & ultra narrow, and do follow the instructions carefully) you will be in a isolated county environment. Great place to see all that Laguria has to offer. Thanks to Lu & leo, from Wayne & family

A drive up twisty narrow roads rewarded us with a gorgeous comfy room, an amazing view off the terrace, and the warm hospitality of the proprietors Lu and Leo. After a long long day of international travel, what a treat to have a delicious home cooked meal and sink into a cozy bed in a room with a view of the olive groves and vineyards in the valley below. It was easy to access Cinque terre and Portofino from Castagnola 64 for day trips. This B and B is a great value folks!
