Located on the cobblestoned side streets off of Santa Maria square in Trastevere. Once through the security gates you walk into a courtyard of lemon and orange trees. Very charming atmosphere, feeling like you are out in the countryside. The staff was very welcoming making sure we understood when breakfast and happy hour take place. Our room was a nice... More

Very good location in the historic cobbled streets of Trastevere. Difficult to find initially but well located once you have got your bearings (head for the basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere, it's in a side street from the square). Couldn't fault the rooms, or the service which was excellent and friendly. Wifi worked well, breakfast was excellent - would... More

Hotel Santa Maria is a fantastic hotel. It only has 20 or so rooms, but is full of character and the service is exceptional. The rooms are more than adequate, have an authentic rustic feel and the showers are superb. Breakfast was delicious - cereals/pastries/cheese/meats/eggs all of a high quality in a nice setting. The orangery is beautiful and the... More

Great location, right in the heart of a Roman neighborhood. That said, our driver didn't use GPS so it can be a challenge to locate. The rooms a small but comfortable, and the staff if very friendly. My only complaint would be that the wireless internet access in the room I was in was awful. I could not use skype... More

Superb Hotel; right in the center of Trastevere; just a short walk across the river into the center of Rome. The Hotel was a little difficult to find at first; as it blends into the local surroundings, but the local residents of the area will happily guide you in the right direction. The hotel staff were extremely welcoming and made... More

We had a fabulous stay at the Santa Maria hotel. The hotel was so pretty and peaceful with the rooms set around a courtyard full of orange trees. We were upgraded to a junior suite on arrival which was a nice surprise and came back on our first evening to an ice bucket with prosecco and a bowl of pistachio nuts as... We really enjoyed our brief 2 night stay at the Santa Maria. The rooms are set around the open courtyard, which has outdoor tables under orange trees. The location is very good, near the central square in Trastevere, and Rome is a walkable city so everything is within reach if you are reasonably fit. If you arrive at Roma Termini... More

We loved our stay in the hotel, great breakfast, very quiet rooms despite being in the middle of a bustling area with loads of restaurants etc. Walking distance to all the main sights, 30 mins to vatican, roman quarter etc. very obliging staff

Staying in Trastevere

Neighborhood Profile
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.
