I have just returned from a 2 week stay in Rome which I probably would have canceled due to the global meltdown if I had not been staying at a reasonably priced lodging. Fortunately I was and can highly recommend it as a way to have a great stay in Rome without sacrificing comfort or quality.
You can book directly with the B&B or through one of the bed and breakfast lodging sites for Italy/Rome. My stay was 55 Euros/night because my stay was lengthy.
I stayed at La Papera Bed&Breakfast which is located in the Garbatella neighborhood of Rome. It is conveniently located close to the Garbatella Metro station and shops and services.
The accomodation is a room with double bed in a private apartment. building on a cul-de-sac street. There is double glazing of the windows but it is a quiet location anyway.
