We spent several nights in this fabulous atmospheric hotel with a beautiful view of the sassi every morning. The large room in the center of the main building is fantastic and worth the extra expense. Nice breakfast and very helpful staff made this a memorable stay

The labyrinth of cave dwellings, or sassi, really do make Matera a special and unique place to visit. Following decades of neglect the city is suddenly fashionable and it's clear that investment is pouring in. The challenge for developers is to provide visitors with modern comforts while retaining the rugged character of ancient Matera. At L'Hotel in Pietra the owners... More

This hotel is the jewel in the crown of Matera. To stay in one of the suites made this short visit a truly unique experience; the staff are friendly, the location is perfect and the hotel is very clean and cosy. I will definitely return.

The staff as well as the accommodations made this a 5 star experience. A beautiful main room/lobby in a former chapel carved into the stone, and our room 1009 was a walk up the hill from the main part with 2 windows in the room to view the sassi by night and by day (also windows in the wonderful bathroom,... We arrived to Matera by car and were lucky to find a free car parking area just outside The Sassi on Via S. Cesarea, (you will be fined if you park in the wrong place), we walked to the Hotel which took about 7 minutes. The Hotel wil provide you a parking space and they charge about 20 euro's per... More

We stayed here for three nights. The first night our room (#105) was very challenging. the bed was in a small room just barely bigger than the bed, that was up a very narrow spiral staircase from the entrance room which was also very tiny and was also the location of the bathroom. We switched to room 106 for the... More

If you are going to stay in Matera you have to stay in the Sassi to get the full experience. The staff are very nice, the selection at breakfast very good and the location superb. The staff were helpful in recommending places to eat and the drivers from the garage to the hotel very helpful also The rooms are individual... More

Really hard to put into words this hotel, see picture above, this was our room. Absolutely fabulous setting and attention to detail. Not often you get to shower in a cave! A great, luxurious base to explore the wonderful setting of Matera. Excellent staff and good breakfast. On arrival we had a member of staff drive with us to try... More

Matera is an unusual and amazing place and this cave hotel was a great base. The rooms do vary a lot but this is reflected in their descriptions and prices - we had room 1004 which is spacious with an amazing bath! The bed was comfortable, wi-fi free, breakfast good, staff incredibly helpful and the whole hotel smelt beautiful. It... More
