We stayed at L'Hotel in Pietra for two nights and really enjoyed the unique and serene ambience of the property. The first impression on arrival is one of calm and relaxation, almost like a retreat. Each room is totally individual with their own unique features. We stayed in Suite 1003 which was tucked away to the left of the foyer.... More

My kids and I were awe struck at the beauty of this town and of the hotel. It is within easy walking distance to all the areas of interest and it is close to some very good restaurants. Roberto and his wife took 4 years to lovingly restore the dwelling, and Roberto and Lucia run the hotel with care and... More

We spent 2 nights in this hotel and would have loved to have spent more. The room was fabulous, maybe slightly damp, but what would you expect being in a cave. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. I would certainly recommend it to my friends.

I really felt as if I had been a contestant on a game show and this stay was my prize. So many "oh's" and "ah's" emanating from our group of college professors staying here for an Italian Studies summer program. Gorgeous, simple, colors--definitely aesthetically pleasing for the minimalist. Nothing gaudy or outdated here, very chic. I subscribe to "Goop" and... More

We loved it here - the hotel, the people at the hotel and the fascinating town. Our first night we were in the smallest room which had a ladder to climb straight up to a platform bedroom area that was scary. we changed to another room the next day (which was fortunately available) and it was fantastic. I do not... More

while in Matera. From the first communication with Roberto I knew we were in for a treat at this hotel. The beautiful transformation of each room...leaving just enough of the original cave but adding all the modern comforts is really extraordinary. We requested and stayed one night in room 1003 with a small terrace and straight on sassi view. The... More

Amazing hotel, amazing room, amazing village. Loved it. Yes there is a musty smell immediately upon entering the hotel. This was initially. Not as strong in our room but oddly the next day we could feel the moisture and smell the mustiness. This is to be expected and the room remains amazing. What they could do better: I was surprised... Impressive reception in a former church built into the rock in the Sassi area, very helpful and kind staff (the receptionist spent 15' drawing an itinerary for a one-day visit of Sassi on the city map), large scenic room carved in the rock, comfortable bed, excellent shower in tiny bedroom, nice amenities, and very original breakfast. Beautiful, comfortable and an... More

My wife and I had the pleasure of staying at L’Hotel in Pietra for four nights. This hotel is absolutely stunning. It was originally a church that epitomized the Matera sassi in that it was carved out of limestone bedrock. The foyer, reception and breakfast area are set in a “grand rocky cathedral”. Our room was amazing. To wake up... More
