The hotel is spread across the lower part of the city in various caves, rooms, etc. A different experience that would have been enjoyable had it not been for the rudeness of the owner concerning some problems that we encountered with our room. Without going into great detail, suffice it to say that we were treated with such anger that... More

Dear guest, Thank you for taking your precious time to review my hotel and also my person. Every remark about myself is contradicted by the other 278 reviews preceding yours (by the way, my name is Alessandra if you do not remember it). Your story is very far from the reality. You stayed with us at the end of September... More

The staff at this hotel was fantastic . Very helpful, polite and service oriented. I made an error in my reservation and they changed it with no problem. The room was an apartment, well equipped, large and comfortable. The breakfast lovely. The minor negative is that the parking in the town can be difficult and I would have rather been... More

We were after the 'cave' experience and got it. We were fortunate to stay in 2 different rooms (Granai and Bifora). The rooms are a 5 minute walk from the main office. Granai had a nice balcony and easy access to the private caves beneath, which you must explore! Bifora was outside the gate on a little corridor but you... More

As we searched for a “home” in Matera, the magnificent city in Basilicata, we looked at several lovely choices set in the cave districts, Sasso Barisano and Caveoso. The S. Giorgio in the Barisano proved an outstanding choice. The desk staff at reception was exceptionally welcoming and helpful from our arrival through our 15-day stay. Alessandra & Brunella, who spoke... Good hotel experience - efficient booking, reception all prepared, good value. Others have noted the difficulties of staying in the Sassi - do remember to register your car with reception BEFORE you arrive if you need to drive in within workday business hours - you need to be registered as a guest or risk a fine. Outside business hours you... More

We were traveling to Matera and got hopelessly lost trying to find the hotel. Our Garmin was not up to topography more vertical than horizontal. Brunella, the concierge on duty left her desk and met us using her car. She "guided" us home. The hotel is of jaw dropping magnificence as is the city. As others reviewers have pointed out,... More

We spent 4 nights here and the room was delightful. Good shower, cool room with a bed on the mezzanine. Kitchen facilities and lots of lovely fresh fruit each day. The staff were particularly obliging and helpful. Matera is a fascinating place and there is much to see there. Wear comfortable footwear as the paths are uneven and there are... More

They call this an "albergo diffuso" by which I suppose they mean that its rooms are quite widely dispersed, but from what we have seen they each have a unique and interesting character. We were in "Granai", a set of spacious rooms, lovely shower room, really comfortable and quiet sleeping space and quite a decent kitchen. Lovely little private terrace... More

One of the best places to stay for last time. Very friendly and helpful stuff, they try to do the best they could for you to be happy. Is so hard to explain the expression when you live in a very comfortable apartment and a cave the same time. Everything in the rooms seems new, except vintage furniture. Cleaning every... More
