Was relatively easy to find the office and parking was available. The rooms are separate from the office, a 150 metre walk mostly on steps but fun. We looked at three rooms available and chose the smallest (and cheapest) which was still reasonably spacious and because we were there after the holiday season, was excellent value. Breakfast was supplied in... More

The idea of living in a cave is great; this cave, though, had some problems. The location of this residence is excellent. It's a little hard to find, but one can easily walk all around the old city from it. (Beware, there are LOTS of steps everywhere.) I don't know how this place compares to others in town, but, seeing... More

We stayed four nights of our holiday here and thoroughly enjoyed Matera and the apartment San Giorgio. The apartment was clean and well-stocked for breakfast items. The location was quiet and we felt at home here. There were places to eat within walking distance. We did have trouble finding the street as on arrival we did not realise that we... More

The place is clean and it,s a pretty unique experience to stay in a cave ( sassi). The owner is very nice and friendly. It was a bit hard to get to the place when driving as you need to get the right road to get near it. The direction was pretty good but we were worried about getting a... More

Been there two times. One of my fav places ever. Love the self cathering rooms: warm, cozy, isolated. Perfect if ur looking for privacy and an old fashioned environment. Elegant, classy. Ask for a room with bath tub. Matera is one of the most beautiful places in Italy probably, but you will desire not to leave the room once you're... More

Staying at the Residence San Giorgio is like staying in an apartment, not a hotel room. There is no maid service. The rooms are a long uphill hike from the registration area, which is basically a lobby with a small seating area; no dining facilities for breakfast. If you’re lucky, you may find a place to park near the registration... More

We had the suite that has its own balcony out over the street. Mod cons are available in the kitchen and there are decent facilities in the bathroom but there are often design compromises in converting an old building so, although the rooms are comfortable the bathroom is very confined and somebody less mobile would struggle with the steps. There... More

This was the second time I've stayed at the Residence San Giorgio. The first time was in 2010. The staff is fantastic and will go out of its way to make you feel comfortable and at home. The hotel offers lodging in both caves and traditional rooms, so you can choose which works best for you, depending on your needs.... More

This review has been a long time coming! First, it has been five years since I visited Matera and the Residence San Giorgio. Second, you are staying in old cave dwellings that have been renovated for modern comfort and still contain tones of history, if these walls could talk. My fiance was studying abroad in Strasbourg, France for a semester.... More

Stayed one night at the Residence San Giorgio - the welcome was superb. Having read about Matera and the Sassi Caves we decided to visit on our recent trip to Italy. No accommodatino previously booked and we turned up on the afternoon. Found the San Giorgio and thank goodness we did. We stayed in the most incredible one bedroomed apartment,... More
