The Sassi Hotel has many rooms but you are here for the cave experience so go for it. Our cave room was very roomy although (understandably) the bathroom (and particular the shower cubicle) was a bit cramped. Our room was particularly large but as we turned up unannounced we agreed on a price and ended up with a "junior suite"... More

I stayed here in a tiny single, cell like room. Obviously its in a cave so i try not to be too judgemental but other singles in the group had much better rooms. The ac however really did not work and the first night i slept with a damp towel over me. The next two nights, Vivien on reception got... More

Sassi Hotel was located in a cave in the Sassi districts. At first finding the hotel from the train station proved difficult due to a lack of tourist maps in the area. This was not the hotels fault. However, the reception was welcoming and the room atmospheric and comfortable. One does not know what to expect in a cave room... More

Matera is an old town parts of which are built into the limestone cliffs and the hotel fits right in with that theme as it is a cave hotel. Only a few of the rooms are actually in the same location as the reception and the dining room with the rest of the rooms separate and spread around the town... More

Very interesting experience in a unique setting. We were travelling with a group, and the bus had to drop us a very long way away. Once you approach the hotel the paths become uneven and slippery. From reception, the rooms are scattered hither and thither, up and down uneven paths. Unfortunately, ours was quite a long way away. Being all... More

It's a great hotel, with big rooms and a great view!! The people working there are very pleasant and they help you a lot! I stayed there for one night on my way back home and it was a great and relaxing night! Thank you Hotel Sassi!

They moved our reservation to a less glam room that wasn't shown on the website. Fine but didn't quite live up to my expectations. Spotty wifi like almost every other place we stayed on this trip. Amazing views from our window and from the deck made it a winner though!!

We stayed two nights in Sassi, and what struck us the most was the overwhelming silence. The room had an atmosphere of a cloister with its high, arched ceiling. This fit well together with the feeling that we'd already got from the old Matera. In December it looked like a ghost town with its eerie beauty. Although the basic things... More

We had one of the cave rooms, 303, that is a long walk down the hill (and up again!) from reception. It was an interesting stay, but I found the room, with no natural light, quite claustrophobic. It was also quite dusty, but we put that down to it being a cave. Bed a bit hard for my taste. We... More

We stayed here for two nights. Each room was in partial "cave" but had all the comforts of a conventional hotel. The view from the hotel makes this place special. The hotel is built on a hill and you must walk on stone stairs to go between buildings, which could be difficult for some people. Also, you cannot bring a... More
