It was an adventure to find the hotel in this medieval town. No roads, only paths. Exactly all this give the jump to the past and make you forget about false valuables of life. Hotel is great - we had 2 storied house with ravine view and stylish design. The breakfast was also great with famous local bread and olive... More

A lovely stay in the marvellous Matera. This is a unique hotel, very quiet and if staying in a cave is your thing it does it very well. Others have commented on the damp - it's a cave - but it was not a problem for us. In very quiet area - good nights sleep. Only downside was the service... More

The hotel is a very unique space. The room we had (111) was very big and comfortably accommodated 4 people. It was very clean and beautifully decorated. Breakfast was delicious and quite different than expected in Italian hotels with lots of fruit, eggs, ham, cheese, etc. Guiseppe (the owner) is a very helpful and friendly guy who knows the area... Arriving by taxi - i was glad the driver could have the converstion on the phone with the hotel - as to how to get there. You have to have permission to park in the square outside St Peters church - and this is required as this area is at the end of a long slope. Once there we were... More

We stayed here for 2 nights and it was a really good experience. The views from outside the rooms are amazing. We slept very well in the "cave". It also has tea / coffee on the room. You can also sit outside the room in the afternoon and relax. The staff are very helpful. The only thing to note is... More

This was a superb place to stay in this uniquely wonderful city. You are in the heart of the old Sassi, in your own cave hotel, with grotto churches and empty caves only metres away, and on the edge of the spectacular drop into the Torrente, with the archaeological park on the other side. The rooms are spacious and clean,... More

We have just returned from visiting Matera for 3 days and staying at the Basiliani Hotel. The town itself is one of the most extraordinary places we have ever visited and is one of the oldest continually inhabited places in the world. A number of the hotels in the Sassi (ancient part of town) are built into the old caves... More

Nothing prepares you for the wonder of The Sassi of Matera, seriously nothing. And the Basiliani Hotel is the absolutely perfect place from which to explore it. This hotel exudes charm. Really, staying in a cave!!!! How cool is that? Mind you, it's a very nice cave, with full facilities, TV, refrigerator and more. You can walk everywhere from here... More

We loved Matera and chose the perfect place to stay. The Basiliani Hotel was great! Very hip, modern feel. Minimalist white. Cool furniture that lights up! Our room was HUGE and had incredible views from two windows. But most of all, we were grateful for all the help from the hotel's proprietor, Giuseppe. He was friendly and attentive and even... More

We stayed here in early May. Matera is stunning. There is so much to see and do. Fascinating history. Go now before it is the 2019 European City of Culture as it is sure to change. It took us a while to settle in to the hotel as it is very modern, built into a rock cave and so different... More
