Great little Hostal just by Puerta del Sol. Close to everything, tour bus passes. Plenty of shops, bars, restaurants. Expected some street noise at night, but was not much. Rooms are lovely and clean, warm and comfy. Recommended.

The major plus side of this little hotel is that it is smack bang in the middle of the city. Pretty much 5 mins walk from the Puerta del Sol metro. It is surrounded by tons of activity day and night. Street performers are there day and night by the metro, whilst there are streets of restaurants within minutes walking.... More

I'm not a light sleeper and the late night party-ers did not bother me too much, but I could NOT sleep through the trash can band that seemed to go on for hours and woke me up way too early Wednesday morning. On the plus side, great central location neighboring a Dunkin Donuts and Museo Del Jamon. As a tourist,... More

Clean and nice place, friendly staff. Tended to be a little noisy on Friday nights as it is a minute walk from Puerta-del-Sol and that' s a noisy place. There is a locker in every room, costs one euro to open\close it. I visited in february and the room was chilly, although an extra blanket is provided.

Located on the second floor of an old building within 5 minutes walking of Sol station (for both Metro and RENFE light rail) and about 25 minutes of Atocha railway station. There is a large supermarket in El Cortes Ingles off Puerta del Sol within 5 minutes walking. All around are fast-food restaurants and more up-market eating establishments. Because it... More

Excellent choice if you are seeking value close to all the main attractions and easy to get to from airport or train station. Simple, but clean and good size room. 24 hr access. Museo de Jambon next door great for breakfast

I stayed at hostal Esmeralda for one night on a Saturday and will definitely return if I'm ever in Madrid ! It it one small street away from Plaza del Sol which is the center of Madrid, so excellent location. It has Museo del Jamon right next to it which had very big and tasty sandwiches for just 1-2 euros.... More

The hotel has a very good location, few steps for metro Sol with 3 metro lines, lots of shops and restaurants. The room is very small, but clean and having all minimum utilities TV, phone, air conditioning. The staff is nice and try to help you, but don`t speak english, that is very bad. No hot weather during the weekend and... More

In the thick of things - on second floor (yeah slightly small, old elevator but I've been in worse and beats carrying bag up the stairs). Some slight language issues at check in but all good, room was very clean although small. Had tv and air-con (phew!). Great value overall! (especially considering it cost nearly as much per night to... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
