Right in the middle of Madrid, a 20 minute walk from the main train station (or 3 metro stations). Room had a desk, a fridge, air conditioning, our own bathroom and a sound system (not sure who chooses the music for this, but it was okay). There was no communal kitchen area, but the owners provided us with cutlery and... More

nice hosts (mother and son), they helped me booking a Flamenco show nice location, near the police station and MacDonald, somehow I feel safe it's noisy at night, but it's noisy whole downtown, so I can get used to it the so called breakfast is a pack of supermarket bread, and coffee/tea packs

Booked via Hotels.com. Tried calling Hostal Comercial to confirm check in time prior to upcoming reservation as per instructions. Unfortunately the language barrier did not help, with the poor woman repeating "you email?" And me repeating "what's the address? Email address please?". Both their website and every other website only lists a telephone number. Fingers crossed I still have a... More

Average hostel with clean but small rooms, ventilators but no ac. the location is superb, less than 100 meters from Puerto del Sol ... And the price was fair. The hostel has got retro spanish style ...

Fantastic place! Room was quite small but super clean, super central, super nice staff, super price, super quiet. I was completely independent since I had a set of keys which was great. I won't be looking to stay anywhere else for my next visits. Alice

Perfect budget accommodation: great location, very friendly owners, clean, the bed was actually extremely comfortable, the Wi-Fi worked well, and there was a small balcony. Overall, it was a great choice.

Not much to say that isn't good or favourable. Clean, comfortable, more of a hotel feel to Hostal Comercial than a hostel. Family run, and they are very friendly and helpful people too. My single room had a sink and shower. The toilet was separate, about five feet from my door. The makings for tea or coffee and a kettle... More

The room could best be described as 'small but perfectly formed'. It was clean and had a perfectly adequate bathroom. We even had a balcony with geraniums overlooking the street. The location was fantastic - literally equidistant between Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor but our room was a quiet and peace haven amid the bustle of the city. The... More

The location of this budget hotel is superb - very close to the top tourist sights of Madrid. The hotel itself exudes calm - it was very intimate, with a central area with couches and a computer. My room was comfortable, with a double bed, sink, table and closet. The washrooms are communal - I noted one 2-piece and one... More

Before I start my review, my readers may note that I rarely mark anything less than 'excellent' or 'very good' and this is not by accident. I carefully review most places that I stay prior to booking and I was NOT disappointed on this occasion! Initially, I was very wary about staying in a hostel as I'm forty years old... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
