It is rare that I rate something as Excellent, so I will qualify my rating a bit. It is excellent for what it is. It is a budget accommodation that is clean, quiet, safe, and affordable. And, it has many pluses. The pluses include its location, wifi, direct access to the owner, and breakfast. I have stayed here 3 times... More

The room is great value for money, small but located in the center, clean and with wifi, airco and bathroom. The only reason I rate the hostal overall low is the fact that we have very unpleasant experienc s with the staff/owner who doesn't (want to) speak English. Firstly: due to health condition I need a room with own bathroom... More

For what I paid, the hostel was fine, with one notable exception: my room had ants. I spotted numerous ants in the room; on the floor, on the bedside table, and all over the bathroom. The upside was that the location is great. It's a five minute walk from the Plaza Mayor and the Palacio Real.

Overall it's an average hostal, not every room is like the pictures!! The pictures all show rooms with ensuite so be careful. A few things to note Good: - hostal is in great location 2 min from Opera and 5 min from Sol - clean rooms with Windows, shutters for light. -Staff friendly -Very clean Bad: - The room wasn't... The hostel is so centrally located that it is definitely worth it. Smelled a bit like smoke the whole time, and the pictures are a bit misleading. But the bathrooms were nice, rooms were cleaned everyday with fresh towels replenished, as well. I would recommend it just because you will not have to metro it anywhere. Everything is within 20ish... More

Using cheaper types of accommodation has its pitfalls but this was last minute and I needed a low cost place to stay - I checked out the hostels and B&B'S and eventually found this one that is just too central to be ignored; right next to Opera! One review I read said negative things about Margarita, the owner so I... More

I made a paid reservation and agreed that it could not be canceled or refunded; never-the-less, the Hotel cancelled it without explanation. Looks like there's a double standard here, so plan accordingly.

Hostal Luz has few redeeming qualities: its locale, free room wi-fi (pronounced 'wee-fee') and its gregarious, hypomanic, lady owner who speaks no English (and I a smidgen of Spanish) who somehow communicates her thoughts not too badly. That's the good news. The bad news? The usual suspects: bathroom horrors like toothpaste in sachets, fourth world toilet paper, poor-draining water in... More

Don't let the age of the building, the appearance of entry or size of the elevator make you think less of it! The hostal is renovated, with beautiful ceramic and mosaic tiles and a welcoming ambience. The room was very nice, with great light and ventilation from two windows, a very comfortable bed, a small refrigerator, enough room for our... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
