The hostel is so centrally located that it is definitely worth it. Smelled a bit like smoke the whole time, and the pictures are a bit misleading. But the bathrooms were nice, rooms were cleaned everyday with fresh towels replenished, as well. I would recommend it just because you will not have to metro it anywhere. Everything is within 20ish... More

Using cheaper types of accommodation has its pitfalls but this was last minute and I needed a low cost place to stay - I checked out the hostels and B&B'S and eventually found this one that is just too central to be ignored; right next to Opera! One review I read said negative things about Margarita, the owner so I... More

I made a paid reservation and agreed that it could not be canceled or refunded; never-the-less, the Hotel cancelled it without explanation. Looks like there's a double standard here, so plan accordingly.

Hostal Luz has few redeeming qualities: its locale, free room wi-fi (pronounced 'wee-fee') and its gregarious, hypomanic, lady owner who speaks no English (and I a smidgen of Spanish) who somehow communicates her thoughts not too badly. That's the good news. The bad news? The usual suspects: bathroom horrors like toothpaste in sachets, fourth world toilet paper, poor-draining water in... More

Don't let the age of the building, the appearance of entry or size of the elevator make you think less of it! The hostal is renovated, with beautiful ceramic and mosaic tiles and a welcoming ambience. The room was very nice, with great light and ventilation from two windows, a very comfortable bed, a small refrigerator, enough room for our... More

This hotel is extremely well located, just 2 minutes away from the Calle Mayor, Plaza Mayor and the San Miguel Market. It is very clean, very well decorated and quite comfortable. My room was ensuite and it had air conditioning, which was very convenient because it was very hot in Madrid during my stay. There is free wifi in the... More

I urgently needed to see a Doctor, however, the owner refused to let a Doctor into the hostal. This is disgraceful. How could they not allow this, I had to book another hotel just to see the Doctor. I dont know what one would do in an emergency. I think my health is more important than 38 euros for the... More

Only one mitunte walk from central Metro Opera Station, this hostel has easy access from both Airport (only two changes by metro) and Train station (straight from Atocha, walk 7-8 min from metro Sol station). Hostel is in centre of Marid's different "Barrios (area/quarter)", such as Latina, Centro, Huertas, Chueca, Malasana etc...great choice in neighbor, restaurants, bars, shops, and Madrid's... More

Had a lovely time in Madrid with my sister and the hostel was perfectly fine for our needs. The rooms are clean, albeit possibly need a bit of tlc (a few small scratches/stains on walls, dodgy looking power sockets with cracked covers etc). There were fresh towels and cleaning every day, and the sheets looked and smelled very clean. The... More

Location at Puerta del Sol in Madrid is a plus. The place is absolutely clean. The room was absolutely adequate with a window opening to a very quiet area in the back of the building. The fan/AC made the room environment cool when needed. The Hostal was booked during the six days we spent there, and yet it was very... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
