I stayed in Hostal Alaska on 10 Oct 09 for three nights. It is clean, basic and convenient located. Both Juan and Christian are very friendly and helpful. They can speak very good English. My room has a small bathroom, a big wardrobe and a big window facing a small square courtyard. I need to pull up the blind in... more

Just enjoyed an 'off-season' five night stay. Huge, comfortable room, very sound-proofed to the street, less so with adjoining rooms (loud snoring next door....) Ensuite bathroom could use some fixing up. Host Juan Carlos is a wealth of info/tips for great food/beverage/events not found in the guidebooks. Nearby Plaza Santa Ana is a real gem. This is a great value... more

It's good to know that others had trouble finding it, but once there you are really central to much of Madrid. Only a block off Puerto del Sol you couldn't ask for a better location. I had also read that some of the rooms were loud. We asked for a quiet room and Juan Carlos was glad to accommodate. The... more

We stayed in a double room for 2 nights. Room was very long & narrow, but spacious for 2 people. En-suite bathroom was tiny but adequate. Shower was great - hot and good water pressure, but towels a bit thin. Location is terrific – two minute walk to Sol, plenty of stores, bars, restaurants, sights, tourist bus stop, really anything... more

Had a little trouble finding the hotel b/c the street numbers are a little weird, but just look at pics people have posted and look for the red door and blue sign above the door and you'll find it. Nevertheless, great location, right off of Puerta del Sol, which makes the metro very accessible but it's also walkable to other... more

It was a family gathering... my brother coming from italy, my parents and brother coming from france and me from peru. we wanted to spend a week-end together in madrid. We have been looking for a quiet place, well located and finally decided to stay at Alaska, since they had this appartment for up to 5 people. It was just... more

We ran into some troubles with flight plans and ended up staying at this hostal for a total of about 10 nights. Juan Carlos the owner was so incredibly accommodating and as a result we enjoyed all our time in Madrid (despite the foul up with our travel plans). At first sight I was skeptical, as it was over a... more

Even though the entrance to the building was slightly intimidating, our fears vanished once we stepped into the door. The owner was there with his lovely dog to meet us. Extremely friendly and provided us with restaurant recommendations that were fabulous. We were given a rather large room that suited us as we weren't planning to spend most of the... more

Juan Carlos was great...unobtrusive but there if you needed him. Room was large and hostel location was fantatsic..round the corner from the heart of Sol. The corte ingles is agreat big supermarket in Sol so we often stocked up there. In Madrid we found the language a little difficult but we still got around and didnt go hungry !!. Dont hesitate... more
