Hostal El Pilar is an inexpensive budget hotel that is conveniently located right smack in the heart of Madrid. It is near essential Madrid tourist sights like the Gran Via, Mercado San Miguel, Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol. There are also plenty of shopping choices and eateries nearby. The Sol Metro Station is only a short walk away and... More

This hostel was advised by a colleague - who also works for Travel Counsellors. Other customers had stayed there and gave a positive review of the hostel. And so do I. The name 'Hostal' can easily be changed into 'Hotel': you have your private room with private bathroom, air-conditioning in the room and daily housekeeping service (new towels, bed redone)... More

Located in central madrid at a perfect location. We only stayed one night and had an early flight but the value for the location and for what you pay is fantastic. Everything can be seen by foot, plenty of restaurants around. Only annoyance was the receptionist did not make a mention of breakfast on check in. We didn't care as... More

I stayed at the Hostal for 4 nights...it is right next to the Puerta del Sol incl. Metro Stadion. I would recommend to buy a Tourist ticket for the Metro at the Airport. i bought one for 5 days for 26Euro..you can go with that ticket all over Madrid incl. the Airport (great value). It is the best and cheap... More

My mother and I stayed at Hostal El Pilar for 5 nights in September-October and it was a really great value for the money. They charge ONLY 55 Euros for a double room and it couldn't be in a better place, 2 minutes walking from la Puerta del Sol. You can visit everything by foot and it's a very pleasant... More

El Pilar is one of those diamonds in the rough. It is right on Plaza Del Sol. It has beautiful, clean, safe rooms. And the building is old and has enormous character and "history". You really feel like you've been to old Spain when you stay here. The party outside rages all night long. And you are literally just steps... More

I think that was the best choice for staying for few days in Madrid. Well priced stay for three people. The room was 4 beds with bathroom with windows to Carretas - the street leading to Plaza del Sol. You have to walk not more than 50 meters to reach the Plaza. To see Madrid we used Metro only twice.... More

Having lived in Madrid during college, I can say that coming back to visit and staying at El Pilar was a solid choice. The hostel is very easy to find once you get out of the metro and is close to all the sights in Plaza del Sol and nearby. Retiro, the museums and Atoche Renfe are all walkable with... More

Neighborhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
