This was the final place we stayed on our 3-month backpacking trip across Europe. We made the mistake of booking four-nights at Bull's Hostel ahead of arriving in Madrid (FYI...never do that, always book 1 or 2 nights, and then extend your stay if you like it). It was difficult to find, and very dark. Once we stepped in the... More

This Hostel is so cool because the staff and the people there are very kind. You will have fun discovering Madrid, knowing you come back "home" in a secure area, with clean bathrooms, practicle kitchen and helpfull staff. I stayed there ten days and felt a bit like at home. Lucie

I wanted to scrub the tub, throw out the faded sheets, buy new shower curtains, dust everything including the photos in the hallway, toss the kitchen (where there was no soda to purchase or much room in the frig), and spend the days chatting up the very personable staff. Convenient location. Very cheap. Zwieback (like you give teething babies) and... More

This place is hard to find, but one there its a good location and very central. Shame about the state of the place, looked like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks, very dark, smelt pretty bad too and I got bitten by fleas on my face, back and legs and the beds in the dorms sweaked very loudly. Do I... More

My friends and I loved staying at Bull's Hostel (seemed clean, reasonably comfortable, nice staff, good location), but after returning from our weekend in Madrid we ALL found that we had bedbug bites! Apart from that, it was a positive experience, but bedbugs are kind of a big negative.

For little over a month in the summer of 2005, my brother and I went backpacking europe....in Madrid (Spain), we stayed at one of the best hostels around- Bull's hostel!.....the staff were extremely friendly, and the place was clean.....and best of all, it was cheap (~20 USD/night)...highly recommended!

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
