We have just returned from a 2 night stay at this hotel. On arrival the reception staff were very friendly and helpful which always puts us in a happy confident mood for our stay. The hotel is very centrally located and within walking distance of all the main sightseeing attractions, restaurants, bars and shops. We stayed in room 219 which was small... More

What a little gem - so glad we found it! Tucked away up a side street just off the Puerta del Sol, entry is via a slightly tatty looking staircase, and you could be forgiven for thinking you're in for a disappointment - how wrong you would be! The whole thing looks freshly refurbished - decor is smart and funky,... More

It doesn't matter how many times I stay here, I never get bored of the place. Just meeting all the staff again is enough of a reason to come back. They are all so wonderful. location is perfect! Very close to Puerto de Sol square! Good Recommended place! :)

Very convenient but in a seedy neighborhood. Room was large, clean but dark and poorly lit. Almost impossible to read. Staff was very helpful. TV had no English channels. Our room faced the street and noise from cafes and occasional drunks continued to 3-4 in the morning. The hotel is actually on the second floor and required an ancient elevator... More

Don't judge the outside! Nice, clean, modern, cozy interior. Nice view of the streets from our balcony. On our first day we walked all the way to Retiro Park. Along the way we saw many of the featured attractions. Very very near to the metro station and lots of shopping to do. I recommend this place!

Was worried booking this hotel as we usually book four stars, but the only draw back was that this hotel was difficult to find as there are two signs for it and it is upstairs. After the initial drama of entering from the old, worn and creaky lobby next door, however, the rest of the stay went smoothly. Small hotel... More

I found this hostal on Tripadvisor and booked it for 2 nights in June. It was just a stated, a real find. It was a little hard to find at first because the taxi couldn't go down the street due to the new king being in town. Also it is on the second floor so look up! Once I settled... More

We spent 4 nights in this hotel and loved the location. It is just a half-block off of Puerta del Sol, and within walking distance of all the major sights in the central area. The room was large, clean, and the bed was comfortable. The breakfast, which is at a cafe around the corner, was basic but adequate. The water... More

We booked into this hostal via a groupon deal and when we arrived the room we were given was in between the laundry room and a storage room and had obviously been a storage room they had converted. It was awfull with no natural light, tiny and claustophobic. The shower was fine but the bed was so close to the... More

My wife and I stayed here on a week long trip through Spain in November 2012. We bought a Groupon voucher for a 2 night stay in this hotel. We followed the instructions on the Groupon to book the room well in advance. When we showed up, the guy running the front desk couldn't find our reservation and would not... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
