Hostal Barrera is within easy walking distance of Atocha Renfe train station, and has 24-hour reception. The staff were all friendly, spoke English, and the room was spotless. I could also leave my luggage there until late afternoon after I'd checked out.

Besides the perfect location you get a spotless clean place with a 24 hour Service which is second to none. I manage 5 star properties around the world for 25+ years, but they went over the Top to accommodate both my mother and daughter. This type of Service where the employees actually care for their guests is so rare these... More

We stayed six nights here and enjoyed our stay. The location is very close to the big museums, the main train station and Retiro Park. The closest metro station is just a few blocks away. Everyone at the front desk was warm, hospitable and helpful. Our room was very clean and very comfortable. Wifi was excellent. The only English news... More

We really enjoyed our stay at Hostal Barrera. The staff were friendly and the rooms were really clean. The Hostal is really well situated for the centre of Madrid, a 5 minute walk from the railway station and close to some great bars and restaurants.

Excellent location near the art museums, lots of nice restaurants in a few minutes walking distance. Easy access to airport via Atocha station (bus, train or metro). Rooms renovated with top quality, wifi works fine. Excellent housekeeping, spotlessly clean room. Very friendly staff. Very good room rate compared to the big hotels. I'm a light sleeper, so earplugs were necessary... More

I was very pleasantly surprised by the very warm reception and friendly staff at this hostal which I found to be immaculately clean and well maintained. The location could not have been better for accessing all the incredible sites in Madrid. Walking distance to museums and palaces not to mention restaurants and transportation.

Great location, walking distance to Prado, Atocha station and other delights. Small room but well appointed. Walked to excellent breakfast in small square nearby. Lots of choices to eat, and then to museums. Great value.

We had stayed here a few years ago, and decided to do so again for a long weekend break. Staying in Lavapies

Neighborhood Profile
Lavapies
Walking into this neighborhood is like entering a different country ... except it's hard to tell which one it is. One side of Calle Lavapiés is lined with Indian restaurants, the other with kebab shops. Men in traditional African clothing convene outside their businesses for long chats, and people shout to each other across plazas and streets. Interspersed among ethnic specialty shops are independent theaters and dance studios, and two large arts and cultural centers — the beautiful Casa Encendida and the Tabacalera, a former tobacco factory — all of which attract young crowds. Along Calle Argumosa, the place to go for drinks, artists and art appreciators with piercings and dreadlocks convene in the street’s eclectic array of young, hip bars. Though some of the side streets can get a little seedy at night, Lavapiés is still the place to go for those seeking a unique blend of arts and culture in an international and funky neighborhood.
