I had a very pleasant stay here. WiFi signal was good from room 304. No hot water issues on this floor as well. I really appreciated my neighbor guests as being very quiet and respectful of their fellow hotel guests, maybe it was just luck? Breakfast buffet was of good quality and value. Location top notch. I appreciated Isabel assistance... More

Hotel Plaza Mayor is located very central to a lot of important sightseeing points of Madrid. Metro is very close to the hotel too. We had a wonderful big room with a big bathroom at the backside of the hotel, so it was very quiet there. The staff very nice with us and very helpful, perhaps we were talking spanish.... More

It’s important to state that I am a frequent traveler who understands that you get what you pay for. In this case, with Hotel Plaza Mayor, I will never stay again even if they offer a 40 Euro special. Here’s why: 1) How could you have a hotel that doesn’t have hot water and most importantly, it seems like it... More

We stayed here for two nights in October and truthfully, I don't think I'd choose the hotel again. The room was much smaller than I'd hope for. With two of us in it, it really did feel cramped. The bed felt smaller than a double but we can't decide if that actually was the case or if it was simply... More

A fairly typical mid-priced city center tourist hotel, but with one very unique and delightful room. STAFF: Just one person manning the desk. Perfectly helpful. LOCATION: Plaza Mayor is the “happening place” in old Madrid and the hotel 50 meters away. It’s also 2 blocks from Calle Cava Baja, which is where all the 20-somethings hang out and drink. ROOM:... The short version is that notwithstanding the great rate that I received by booking this hotel seven months in advance (I paid sixty six U.S. dollars a night) I would never stay here again. The Good The location is excellent as the hotel is located across the street to the entrance to the Plaza Mayor and a mere four minutes... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
