Owner was constantly argumentative and consistently unhelpful. The rooms were small but mostly comfortable (not sure why they have a naked woman painting in a "gay" hostel, though). Receptionist was very friendly and informative with information about local restaurants and directions to places. Location was steps from the Metro . Breakfast was a little bland ,but it was something to start the day . room was a good size , basic but clean . very good for the price if you are on a budget . more

We foolishly didn't take the advice of others before us who have given this place bad reviews. The only positives about this place are its central location and the other disgruntled guests we met who were staying here at the same time. I've stayed in Madrid several times before, and always in hostels. You would normally expect basic but clean rooms and decent service. The Hostal Puerta del Sol, however, is truly horrible: the rooms are grimy, the corridors smell and the whole place feels gloomy and depressing. For the money this has to be the best place to stay in Madrid. We paid some £32 a night for a room with a roof terrace and en suite. If you are looking for business class type service then look elsewhere and be prepared to empty your wallet for the privilege and again for the internet access you get... more

What a dump Hostal Puerto Del So isl, We had a horrid, dingy, room which was tiny, dark and depressing, with the cheapest, nastiest furniture I have ever seen anywhere. It was like a prison cell.
