Fantastic location and the best hosts in Madrid! My first time to Madrid and I found a gem of a place to stay. Javier and his brother Antonio were so kind and helpful with everything! I had an eye irritation that made my eye red and swollen and finally I decided it was not going away so I asked Antonio... More

We, as a mature couple, stayed two nights at Hostal Gonzalo, and was very satisfied with the friendliness of the owner, the excellent location, the cleanliness and size of the room. A minor point of criticism is the fact that the air conditioner could not be adjusted. As with many hostals in Madrid, breakfast is not available as an option.... More

Family-run hostal, spotless, excellent location just around corner from famous tapas bar street and many small restaurants. 2 blocks from the Prado and beautiful parks. Friendly, helpful Javier who emailed promptly. Close to laundry. 10 minute walk to Puerta del Sol. Our first experience in a hostal, and we would definitely return!

This little Hostal is off a main walking thoroughfare. It had easy access to Madrid and had wonderful security. It was very clean and we were very apprciative that the manager upgraded us to a little apartment with two twins since I was traveling with my adult daughter.

5 stars because it is terrific value. We paid 60 euros per night for an ensuite room overlooking Calle Cervantes. Clean, quiet, basic, air con, welcoming owners, a classic antique lift, and the perfect location, being equidistant from the galleries and Retiro Park to the east, and the busier tourist areas to the west. 10-20 minutes walk gets you to... Javier, (proprietor, concierge, Madrid insider and an all-around good guy) is cut from the cloth that created Nineteenth Century hoteliers. Never intrusive, filled with suggestions, attentive to his guests' needs, it was a pleasure having this gentleman as our liason to one of the world's great cities. Hostal Gonzalo is meticulously clean and scrupulously maintained. Our street side room reflected... More

Our 3rd visit to this Hostal. We had room 5 which is a twin facing the small courtyard. The room is very basic but the beds are very comfortable with fresh white cotton sheets and the towels were changed every day. It does not have a coffee machine or fridge and people might wonder why it is rated so highly... More

Hostal Gonzalo is a block from the Prado, and a 20-minute walk to the Atocha train station. Many nice restaurants within one block. Javier and his family were friendly and accommodating. They allowed us to store bags several hours after we checked out. Wifi worked well. Rooms were clean. There is an elevator to access this 3rd-floor hostal.

This hostal is on the third floor (but there's a lift) of an old street right in the centre of Madrid minutes from the Prado and the other museums. The position is fantastic, quiet, safe, with cafes and bars all around but in the next streets. Right opposite is a cafe which serves anything you might want for breakfast and... More

This place was absolutely perfect. The rate was great, the rooms were very clean and comfortable, and you are walking distance from all the main attractions. The staff was truly remarkable. Javier helped us with two major issues, including retrieving a camera we left in a cab and mailing back souvenirs we left in the hotel. All of his recommendations... More

Staying in Huertas

Neighborhood Profile
Also known as Barrio de las Letras, Huertas was once home to prominent literary figures, Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega among them. The neighborhood is committed to celebrating its rich heritage: Calle Huertas itself is inlaid with quotes from celebrated authors, street names pay homage to them, and second-hand bookshops pervade. Huertas receives a fair amount of spillover from the center — side streets around Plaza Santa Ana take on a foreign party atmosphere at night, and you always see young backpackers navigating the streets — but as you descend into the neighborhood, everything becomes a little more cramped and slightly less refined, and takes on more of an underground feel. Live music is at the heart of Huertas: by night, its subdued bars are ideal for meeting friends, sipping cocktails, and chatting quietly while enjoying jazz or singer-songwriter performances.
