This place was absolutely perfect. The rate was great, the rooms were very clean and comfortable, and you are walking distance from all the main attractions. The staff was truly remarkable. Javier helped us with two major issues, including retrieving a camera we left in a cab and mailing back souvenirs we left in the hotel. All of his recommendations... More

Hostal Gonzalo is very cozy and is in the very heart of the city where all significant sites are accessible by foot. Javier who is managing the hostal was very very helpful. He's very patient with all my inquiries and responds to email promptly which helped us decide to proceed with the trip. When we got their he provided us... More

My wife and I stayed at hostal gonzalo in March of 2015. We arrived and were greeted by Javier, the proprietor. We couldn't have asked for a more congenial host! The hotel is a small establishment on the 3rd floor of a building in the museum district of Madrid. It was just a short taxi ride from the airport. We... More

The Hostel Gonzalo offers some of the best elements of a small hotel and a home stay with a nurturing family in the heart of Madrid. The hotel is contained within an elegant old residence with an atmospheric, old lift (elevator) and has clean, quiet, reasonably priced rooms under the care of Javier, someone who is very supportive of his... Hostal Gonzalo is a very small and cosy place in a great location! The staff is really nice, but I must admit, we didn't have a chance to meet them very often. The room was very clean and we loved the small spanish balcony!

We stayed for three nights in is wonderful little hotel, perfectly placed in a quiet side street just 100 metres from all the nightlife you could want and walks g distance to the three art galleries. It was spotlessly clean, quiet and comfortable and very reasonably priced, as well as having free WIFI. Our host, Javier, could not have been... More

We could not have been happier with our accommodations in Madrid two weeks ago. This hostel sparkles with cleanliness and is as charming as our hosts, Javier and Antonio. We were only sorry that we were not going to spend more than three nights in Madrid. They even provided us with sunny, clear weather! It was a perfect reunion destination... More

Javier and his brother Antonio were so gracious and helpful, they made us feel at home immediately. The hostal is located near Atocha and all three great museums. The rooms are comfortable and clean. I would recommend this hostal highly to all my family and friends.

If you are looking for a hostel where you wouldn't be embarrassed to take your mother then Hostel Gonzales is an excellent choice. This hostel is classy and sophisticated. It is run by two brothers. Their personal oversight over the hostel and its guests is filled with caring and absolute professionalism. I stayed for two nights in a twin-bed room... More

We frequently visit Madrid. We have stayed at Gonzalo several times over the last five years and now consider it our home in the city. The hosts, Javier and Antonio, are kind and helpful. The location is perfect. Many reviews have noted its proximity to the Prado and Thyssen, but it also an easy walk to Retiro, our favorite urban... More

Staying in Huertas

Neighborhood Profile
Huertas
Also known as Barrio de las Letras, Huertas was once home to prominent literary figures, Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega among them. The neighborhood is committed to celebrating its rich heritage: Calle Huertas itself is inlaid with quotes from celebrated authors, street names pay homage to them, and second-hand bookshops pervade. Huertas receives a fair amount of spillover from the center — side streets around Plaza Santa Ana take on a foreign party atmosphere at night, and you always see young backpackers navigating the streets — but as you descend into the neighborhood, everything becomes a little more cramped and slightly less refined, and takes on more of an underground feel. Live music is at the heart of Huertas: by night, its subdued bars are ideal for meeting friends, sipping cocktails, and chatting quietly while enjoying jazz or singer-songwriter performances.
