This is NOT a family orientated apartment block. If you want to stay somewhere that the smell of Weed wafting through the windows, on the landings, hitting you as soon as you go in the main, always OPEN front door then you should pay lots of money and book. If you enjoy the Non Existing Air Conditioning (that is advertised... More

We stayed here for a week. The staff were great, the room comfortable, the breakfasts superb. Above all, the location made it easy to walk to: the Prado; Royal Palace; Plaza Mayor; Reina Sofia and Thyssen museums. Great shopping and restaurants. Fans of Hemingway and great food eat at Restaurant Botin. And beautiful parks make this city a joy.

Friends had recommended this boutique hotel, and they were right. The location is ideal for walking, for accessing public transit, and for exploring this underrated European capital. Our overnight flight put us at the hotel early on a Sunday morning. At first, we were told our room wasn't ready, but the receptionist "discovered" a room was available for early check-in.... More

This hotel sits on a strip of restaurants and bars. The staff are so welcoming, very smartly dressed in their whites and absolutely on the ball with service. But it's the gazpacho I'd like to talk about! One of my fave things to eat when I visit Spain. I'd tried pretty much every place selling gazpacho on ' the strip... More

It's just beautiful in every way. Staff are helpful and friendly. The superior double room was just excellent with mood lighting, a fabulous bathroom and a free minibar for water, beer and soft drinks. The hotel is centrally positioned for all Madrid's major sights. We loved Madrid and will return and would not choose to stay anywhere else.

We stayed for three nights at Hotel Preciados. The room was just as advertised on the website -- a comfortable large bed and very nice terrace. The folks at the front desk were wonderful - thoughtful, attentive, informative for every request. (And they sent up a nice bottle of wine the second night.) The folks in the restaurant on the... We stayed here for a week. The hotel was great, worth every penny. Breakfast was excellent, the whole hotel had a luxurious feel and is in one of the best situated for the sights. The royal palace was five minutes walk - well worth the ten euros to go in photography is very limited, but the interior is breathtaking, the... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
